Evita – Buxton Opera House

There’s always a warm welcome at the beautiful Buxton Opera House, and their current amateur production of Evita delivered a spellbinding theatrical experience that left Friday night’s sold-out audience captivated from start to finish. The production boasted an extraordinary amateur cast whose performances breathed new life into the iconic characters.

Catherine Pugh’s portrayal of Eva Perón was a tour de force, displaying a remarkable range of emotion and commanding the stage with her presence. Opposite her, Ross Clifton delivered a powerful performance as Juan Perón, capturing the character’s authority and complexity with finesse. Luke Clayton brought depth and charisma to the role of Che, serving as a compelling narrator throughout the production, while Steve Sheppard charmed audiences as Magaldi, leaving a lasting impression with his charisma.

The staging, though minimalist, was incredibly effective in setting the tone and atmosphere of the production. Atmospheric lighting, coupled with dynamic moving lights descending from the rafters, added depth and dimension to the stage, enhancing the visual experience for the audience and drawing them deeper into the world of “Evita.”

The addition of the talented Evita tango dancers injected energy and passion into the production, their electrifying performances adding an authentic Argentinian flair to certain numbers. Their precise choreography and emotive expressions captured the essence of the tango, enriching the narrative and heightening the emotional impact of the story.

Complementing the performances was the presence of a full orchestra, whose sweeping melodies and dynamic arrangements filled the theatre with an undeniable sense of grandeur, a theatre which is full of grandeur itself.

In conclusion, Buxton Opera House’s amateur production of “Evita” was a triumph on all fronts, thanks to its exceptional cast, inventive staging, and its creative reworking. Under Paul Kerryson’s direction, the production succeeded in delivering a memorable and immersive night at the theatre for all in Buxton and the surrounding areas to enjoy!
