Confetti – Unity Theatre

As part of Homotopia 2022, Quick Duck Theatre brings us this one-man queer rom com show to the Unity stage. It had its debut at this year’s Edinburgh fringe festival and received some well-deserved reviews during its run.

Written and performed by Will Jackson (who also brought his show Yours Sincerely to last year’s Homotopia) Confetti tells the endearing story of Felix, wedding planner extraordinaire who is helping set the stage for his best mate’s wedding.

Felix’s story takes in all the events leading up to the wedding (including the traditional hen night shenanigans) and Jackson’s vibrant script is definitely a homage to the gay best friend (always reduced to the minor character position in more traditional rom com’s).

It is just so good to hear positive and coherent queer voices in the theatre and Jackson’s show is an excellent example of this.

Jackson as Felix gives an energetic and captivating performance and builds a great rapport with his audience throughout the show.

To offset the humour, Felix also has a fragile and sometimes lonely side to his character and Jackson cleverly interleaves this within his script. Could romance of some kind just be around the corner for our hero or will he be forever destined to be the mate of honour all time? A question that could possibly be answered during the show.

One thing for sure, Felix is one fierce queer with a fabulous story to tell and with some audience participation thrown in along the way, this is probably one wedding you wouldn’t want to miss.

Directed with great aplomb and attention to detail by Hannah Birkin, the pace never slackens once, and it proves a captivating 80 minutes. Special mentions to the creative team at Quick Duck Theatre including   Maria Terry (Design), Tom Rackham (Composer and Sound Design) and Eleanor Rattenbury (Movement Director) – a totally winning team

Confetti is a show with a big heart, and it gets all the Fs from me – fun, fizzy and fabulous!!
