If you’re a fan of musical theatre, Chicago at the Regent Theatre in Stoke is an absolute must-see. This iconic production, currently on tour, is nothing short of sensational. From the moment the overture begins, the packed theatre buzzes with excitement, setting the stage for a night of pure theatrical magic.
Set in the roaring 1920s, Chicago plunges audiences into a world of jazz, scandal, and sensationalism. Against the backdrop of Prohibition and a media frenzy that transforms criminals into celebrities, we follow Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly—two women locked up for murdering their lovers. The show’s gritty glamour, sharp wit, and intoxicating music transport you straight to the heart of Jazz Age Chicago.
A minimalist yet striking set design instantly captures attention. A lone chair and bowler hat introduce the mood, while the orchestra remains a centerpiece on stage throughout the performance, interacting with the cast in delightful moments. One highlight comes during Act Two’s overture, where the orchestra breaks into a cheeky, dance-infused rendition of Mr. Cellophane, delighting the audience.
The show launches with a bang as the cast dives into the sultry All That Jazz. The choreography, inspired by Bob Fosse’s original vision and recreated by Gary Chryst, is flawless—seductive, energetic, and packed with style. From shoulder shimmies to high kicks, the dancers deliver with precision.
The cast is phenomenal. Djalenga Scott is magnetic as Velma Kelly, commanding the stage with her powerhouse vocals and commanding presence. Faye Brookes shines as Roxie Hart, blending humour, energy, and charm into a performance that cements her status as a true triple threat. Kevin Clifton as Billy Flynn oozes charisma, surprising fans with his smooth vocals, while Sinitta Malone brings flair and power as Mamma Morton, stealing the spotlight with When You’re Good to Mama.
Visually, the production dazzles. Costumes of fishnet, sequins, and leather amplify the sultry tone, while the simple yet elegant set, complemented by atmospheric lighting, proves less can truly be more.
With its stunning choreography, breathtaking performances, and timeless music, Chicago delivers two and a half hours of pure entertainment that flies by in a heartbeat.
