Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana with Acosta Danza at The Lowry is a dazzling spectacle that breathes vibrant life into a timeless classic. I was mesmerised from start to finish! This fast-paced production takes Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet and adds the energy, colour, and rhythm of Havana, creating an experience that left me smiling from ear to ear. From the very first scene, it was clear that this was a Nutcracker unlike any other. The staging was cleverly devised, blending traditional ballet with clever, modern touches that felt fresh and innovative. Breezeblock Park – Hope Street Theatre

Breezeblock Park, set in Liverpool, during Christmas of 1975, following the highs and lows of a Scouse family as they encounter a different class, a shock revelation and try with all their might to maintain their Christmas spirit throughout. Written by Willy Russell, directed by Clayton Travis and performed by Off Topic Theatre Company. This performance is lengthy, hard hitting and diverse. The cast did extremely well with such a performance and each character portrayed their own morals, characteristics and mannerisms well, meaning the audience had a good grasp of the types of personalities, temperaments and natures which graced our stage. Ensemble 10:10 – Tung Auditorium

The audience at the Tung Auditorium were treated to what can only be described as a remarkable concert with several notable firsts. This was Domingo Hindoyan’s debut conducting Ensemble 10:10. Ensemble 10:10, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022 and became resident at the Tung Auditorium in the same year, was established by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to showcase new music and to offer support to new composers, particularly those from the North West. With this in mind, last night’s concert began with the world premiere of a piece by Sam Kane, winner of the Rushworth Composition Prize in 2023. Calamity Jane – Opera House

Aaahh, Calamity Jane; evoking warm childhood memories of sitting on a Sunday afternoon in front of the TV with my late Mum, watching Doris Day (in implausibly pristine buckskin) sparring with Howard Keel in the iconic 1953 film. I clearly was not alone in my wistful nostalgia this evening, with a packed press night audience forsaking hearth and home during a freezing January, to rapturously welcome this stage version as it sets off on a 29 city tour of the UK over the next six months. They were rewarded with a show which revels in its sentimentality but has enough heart and humour to send even the most cynical critic home humming its memorable songs. Spotlight on Showstoppers – Rainhill Village Hall

An evening of energy and laughter with Rainhill Musical Theatre Company and their concert ‘Spotlight on Showstoppers' which showcases crowd pleasing favourites from old and new musicals. With a cast of only 10 including wonderful harmonies and performances from Pip Bradshaw, Ruth Gibb and Suzi Davies, they did a tremendous job in keeping us all entertained. A few favourites stood out and had the audience talking from a beautiful ballad of 'Tell me it's not true' performed by Barbara Marsh to lively and upbeat 'All that Jazz' confidently performed by Claire Jones. Claire Heaton was there to get the audience clapping and singing along with her rendition of 9 to 5 and Meg Charlton and Claire Jones performed 'What is this feeling?' from Wicked excellently, it was very entertaining ...

It’s January, it’s cold but last night attending Swan Lake at the Manchester Opera House, brought to life by the supremely talented Mergaliyev Classical Ballet, was nothing short of magical. It was the perfect tonic for the January Blues. This timeless masterpiece, with Tchaikovsky’s exquisite score conducted by the masterful Guntars Bernats, transported us to a realm of beauty, grace, and wonder—a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. What better way to shake of the Christmas/New Year blues than with the performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in a tradition dating back to 1849. Handel composed the oratorio in a mere 24 days in 1741, but despite a warm reception at its premiere in Dublin, it received a cooler response at its subsequent performance in London.
