Based on the 1953 film, Calamity Jane is finally back on stage and whipping up great audiences all over the UK. This time starring multi award-winning theatre star Carrie Hope Fletcher (Les Misérables, Heathers) as the titular Wild West heroine, this touring revival is bound to have your feet a-stomping and your hands clapping.
Fearless, gun-slinging Calamity is always telling tales of her adventures to her friends in Deadwood, but this time might be one lie too many. When she promises to bring back an adored actress to appease the obsessed men of the town, Calamity not only causes chaos amongst the people, but she may have instigated a love battle… and who will get her heart in the end? Alongside the classic tunes from Sammy Fain and Paul Francis, this new adaptation by Charles K. Freeman takes all the film’s iconic moments, and transfers them beautifully to the stage, making it a sure-fire hit.
From the curtain rising, the set instantly takes us back in time and immerses the audience in the era. The terraces and mini stage work well, whether in Calamity’s cabin, or as the backdrop of a ball, they are complemented by the lighting and transport us through the story.

Songs such as “Secret Love” and “Whip Crack-away” are bound to have a lively response from audiences, and the crowd at the Winter Gardens were definitely appreciative. What’s even more impressive from this cast, is that they aren’t just singing these songs, they’re also playing the instruments. Actor-musician productions are becoming ever more popular, and when an onstage-band fits well within the story, why wouldn’t you use the talent of a company who can do it all? Going from bar regulars to the band, and even into a horse drawn carriage, the ensemble is integral within this piece, and it’s incredibly impressive to witness their multi-talented skillsets.
With such a memorable portrayal being immortalised on screen by Doris Day, a seasoned pro was needed to take on the role, and I believe Fletcher was the right choice to sit in the saddle. A buttery vocal tone, and enough gusto to charge up the auditorium, Fletcher’s Calam is a lovable rogue who the audience can’t help but root for. Opposite her as Wild Bill Hickock, Vinny Coyle (Aspects of Love) matches her stubbornness with direct putdowns and equal wit. Coyle strides across the stage with a captivating charm and arrogance but also is equally believable in the tender moments where he lets his guard down.
Seren Sandham-Davies is a quirky Katie Brown, managing to convey her naive spirit with likeability, and Luke Wilson as lieutenant Danny is as convincing in his adoration of her. Characters such as Henry (played by Peter Peverley) and Francis (Samuel Holmes), never seem to catch a break in the narrative, but their panic and worry make for a lot of laughs. The whole ensemble is essential in bringing this story and music to life, and they are ever consistent in their top-tier performances.
Not only is the show asking a lot of its cast, it’s also a difficult task to do the original justice, but Nikolai Foster and Nick Winston have brought a very ambitious idea to life with this production. Don’t miss out on this whip-crackin musical comedy and get down to Deadwood for a night of nostalgic fun!
