Burke & Hare Body Snatchers Serial Killers, Ulstermen – Pickle Studio at Greenside @ Riddles Court

Sometimes the bustle of the fringe can get a little much: all those loud sounds, bright lights and dance numbers, sometimes you just need a cosy little sit down where you can discuss serial killers…. well that’s my idea of a relaxing break anyway.

Burke & Hare Body Snatchers Serial Killers, Ulstermen talks about the real history surrounding the infamous serial killers, starting way before their crimes. Historian Andrew Johnston takes the story from the point of view of an Irish man himself, stating that he wishes to “reclaim” the killers history for Ireland. We start with the Origins of Burke, Hare and their wives, delve into the lead up to the murders and the victims. We hear of the medical school’s struggles and role in the case, along with the verdict that would leave the public wanting for many years to come.

Johnston is an incredible storyteller and his passion for the subject does not go amiss. His voice is clear and trustworthy (surprisingly for a guy whose main interest is murder and death) and the session feels less like a lecture and more like a conversation with a friend. No repetitive rhythms and a complete respect for the subject matter, including the humanization of those involved in the crimes. Well placed humour and I really enjoyed the use of a large flip book rather than a screen to show the imagery within this intimate setting.

The only thing missing from this show is a bigger space, as it deserves a much bigger audience than the room allows.
