Baltic – Cumbernauld Theatre

Well, this is a panto full of creative Christmas joy!  The word BALTIC is the jokey Scottish colloquialism for the word FROZEN, so the audience arrived in anticipation of being treated to a narrative which involved at least some of the much-loved characters of the Disney movie.  It turns out that they weren’t to be disappointed. According to the promo blurb, brave young Elspeth, with magical powers still to be unleashed, lives in the snowy village of Glenfrost. When her brother Kai is kidnapped by the wicked Snow Queen Chilblain and her slippery sidekick Jack Frost, she sets off on a daring rescue mission.  She’s joined by her hilariously cheeky pal Sammy the Slush, her snow-stopping mammy Dame Agnes Avalunch, and a whole host of frosty new friends, including a talkin...

Kevin Quantum: Unbelievable Magic for Non-Believers – Ballroom at Assembly Rooms

The audience was intrigued from the moment they were approached by an Assembly assistant in the queue outside the venue asking if each individual was a ‘believer’ or a ‘non-believer’ and issuing a red or blue card accordingly.  This was a nice touch – bringing the audience together, before they even became a group. The premise of the show is that it was made for the non-believers, for those who believe in science over magic, the entire audience greeted with the sight of a sparking electrical transformer which stayed in situ throughout the entire performance as a reminder of the show’s narrative.  It must be a tall order for a performer to set this kind of show apart from other similar formats, but this angle worked well. Kevin Quantum emerged on stage in a surprisingly ...

Famous Lost Birds – The Annexe at Paradise in The Vault

This is a new play written by Daniel Grady and Maisy Nichols and produced by Land of Nod.   The advertising blurb is pretty intimidating as far as the description of the narrative is concerned.  It involves a down-on-his-luck impressionist, a blind dying mother, glam rock gods, street heroin, misguided mobsters … hang on a minute, this reviewer just has to have a wee lie down … nope, no time … onstage it gets even more complex … some Northern stand-up, a long lost brother, cosmetic surgery, deep maternal regret … no really … this reviewer has to have a moment … no, no, no, there’s no time … There’s a lot of energy being thrown at the audience in this play and undoubtedly, it’s the energy of raw talent, belief and commitment.  There’s some funny original stuff in ...

Anyone For Tennis: Pauline Eyre – Hoot 1 at Hoots @ The Apex

Pauline Eyre was a Wimbledon line judge for 20 years and has very experienced eye right on the ball.  Standing at the top of a flight of stairs dressed in her official Wimbledon uniform, she greeted her audience queuing below by stepping right into character, giving very clear, jokey, line judge-y instructions about where we should all sit courtside.  Yep, she got us match-ready before we even got through the door. An impressive individual is Pauline - one of those people who looks as if she’s got all her ducks in order.  She took time to greet and help organize the audience (a full house), instructing that we should all budge up to leave empty seats at the end of the aisles for latecomers, and then leaping to the back of the room to play her own introduction music – ...

The Football Actress – C Venues

This one-woman show is billed as an autobiographical drama-comedy featuring Lucia Mallardi, a former semi-professional footballer who travelled as a street artist.  The show’s advertising blurb claims that Lucia’s story is empowering, challenging boundaries, merging sports and theatre. Well, firstly – yes, this show is autobiographical.  Very.  The performer is telling the story of her own life.  Undoubtedly bright and brave, she is performing in English, not her native language, with a smattering of rapid fire Italian and accents of languages picked up on her travels.  However, just because you’ve chosen to live an unconventional life doesn’t mean that the recounting of some of it will add up to something which will hold an audience’s attention.  After...

Holly Street – theSpace on the Mile

This is a play produced by Long Face Theatre Company and New Celts Productions, set in a meeting room where five writers brainstorm the 35th anniversary episode of Holly Street, a soap opera.  The writers plan, plot, squabble and tease until they inadvertently/magically slip into an alternate reality and in the process, they reveal to the audience who they really are behind their facades. So far, so interesting.  It’s the magical whiteboard, y’see – whatever’s written on it comes true and that gradually dawns on the writers, who manage to bravely and noisily unite to confront and overcome the zombie attack out with the performance space and reach the crescendo of the piece - returning to the ‘stage’ triumphant, much to the audience’s noisy appreciation. Yep, this is a v...

The Oberons – theSpace @ Surgeons’ Hall

This is a show showcasing the talents of a couple called The Oberons – Marc, described as a master illusionist and Emily, described as a mind reader who also happens to be a classical singer. The show opens gently and fairly classically with the use of magic trick props, which I must confess seem all too familiar, but it soon starts to reach breakneck speed attempting to display an almost bewildering array of magic and mind reading in the time given, using song in its presentation. There is no doubt that there are elements of this show which are highly entertaining – particularly at the level of competence displayed by the charismatic Marc and Emily.  Individually, they are charming.  They engage the audience with olde worlde ease and experience, inviting them into thei...

Blame It On The Bucky – Reconnect Regal Theatre

This new play has the potential to become one of Scotland’s classics.  It’s advertised as ‘an uproarious comedy’ – that, it most certainly is.  It’s billed as ‘a hilarious night’ – oh yes, that’s for sure.    However, it’s more – it’s a depiction of family dynamics, of fear and frailty, life and death.  The balance between its comedic quirkiness and its unexpected depth is what makes this play so exciting. It affords the great spectacle of farce.  Two men, hungover from a night on the ‘rambo juice’, have no memory of what on earth they did with Granny’s corpse when they were on the razz.  Well, it must’ve seemed like a good idea at the time … but hurry … the funeral’s fast approaching ... there's a baby on the way … … get a move on … tick tick...

Colin Cloud: Consequences – Underbelly, Bristo Square

Colin Cloud's return to the fringe is something to be celebrated, nay, something to be shouted about.  HURRAY!  The America's Got Talent Las Vegas hotshot appears in what feels like a gothic setting in the McEwan Hall, the perfect venue for his performance which goes l-a-r-g-e and roves around the audience. Since I last saw Colin (yes, I feel as if I know him from way back when the family and I first saw him on stage) he seems to have become more - more steampunk, more fearless.  Och, just more.  I'm very aware that there are probably those who don't believe in Colin's mentalist powers.  Are these audience members planted?  How could he possibly know this?  How could he possibly know that?  Well, I'm here to tell you that several years ago,...

Tales of Haunted Edinburgh: Echoes From Beyond the Grave – Arthur Conan Doyle Centre

Ewan Irvine is a psychic and paranormal medium, tutor and author.  He has hosted ghost hunts of ancient buildings, has had his own radio shows and appeared on TV.  He has done spiritual readings across the country and has written books and published articles.  Also, I must say here and now that Ewan is known to this reviewer as a very dear friend - full disclosure.  I have watched Ewan become a powerful speaker, in recent years.  This is not his first foray into the Edinburgh Fringe and I'm certain that it won't be his last.  Every year, though he seems to bring something very different to the speaking lectern.  This year, he spoke about tales of hauntings, of ghosts, of inexplicable phenomena which are particular to the capital city.  And he - almos...
