Magic and Sex – The King’s Arms

I didn’t know what to expect walking into Magic and Sex — a one-woman stand-up, magic, and improv show by Australian comedian Kathryn Haywood — but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Even on a very, very hot and stuffy night in the upstairs room of the King’s Arms, Haywood’s boundless energy and zany charm kept us all laughing, chuckling… and then laughing some more. From her entrance in sparkly tail coat, top hat and deck of card leggings and tap shoes she bounded round that space and sucked us in, immediately. She is a very engaging performer. Part stand-up, part magic show, with a cheeky (but not over-the-top) nod to the title’s promise of “sex,” Haywood’s performance is a joyful, chaotic romp. Come Fall in Love: The DDLJ Musical – Opera House, Manchester

Opening to a packed press night audience , this iconic Bollywood love story movie from 1995 is translated to the musical stage with a sparkling , brand new score of 18 songs from Nell Benjamin (Mean Girls) capturing the authentic bhangra beats and style and rhythms of the culture and breathing new life and reimagining this Bollywood blockbuster, musically. The music was a highlight and although new musicals never usually leave me with an ear worm , Act One’s Twice as Good’ and Act Two’s ‘ Desi Kudi’ definitely hit the sweet spot. As someone who fell in love with Annie as a child—watching it at the cinema, singing along and knowing every line, every lyric, and every character, intimately—this reviewer came to Mossley AODS’s production with both deep affection and high expectations. A lifelong fan of the original movie version, I’m well aware that the stage musical differs in places—some of the iconic songs are swapped out, the pacing is different—but at its core, Annie remains a story rooted in resilience. Opening night at the Lowry Theatre’s Lyric Theatre welcomed a full house and a palpable buzz of anticipation as the stage adaptation of Peter James’s Picture You Dead took to the stage. Known for his 20 gritty, pacey crime thrillers about Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and the spin off TV series Grace - James has built a devoted following through his Roy Grace novels, and this latest adaptation brought that dark, intriguing world vividly to life. Evita – Stockport Plaza

Following on from last year’s excellent production of Priscilla comes Romiley Operatic Societies presentation of the popular and multi award winning Lloyd-Webber classic, Evita! This society perform here each year and completely utilises this beautiful, Art Deco theatre with its huge, and I mean huge, proscenium and luxurious auditorium with fabulous sight lines and acoustics. And did they use it well? Oh yes and some. I counted 50 performers on stage in some of the numbers which takes some enormous artistic direction and choreography and logistics to make that work but boy they did and with aplomb. Brennan Reece: Me Me Me – Royal Exchange

Playing to a sold out , home crowd of family , friends and fans of this extremely popular, highly likeable and extremely watchable home grown Manc comedian on a Friday night at the beautiful Royal Exchange was Brennan Reece. What a brilliant venue and I was interested how he’d play to the audience in the round but he absolutely revelled in it and worked every curve as he assessed his audience and fed off their laughter. With three supporting acts to open and warm up the crowd was the ‘ intense eyed ‘ Larry Dean whose manic expressions, quick patter and physical comedy, Norman Wisdomesque face pulling and self analysis of his Autism making him conclude that all his previous relationships were gas lighters had me howling.
