The Book of Mormon – Edinburgh Playhouse

It should be immediately noted that The Book of Mormon Musical is not a factual retelling of the original Mormon text, nor is it created to pay homage to the religion itself, in fact one could argue it does exactly the opposite. Brought to you by the creators of South Park, The Book of Mormon is a comedy musical designed to poke fun and indulge one’s dark humour needs. We follow the mission taken by two Mormon’s from the Latter-Day Saints Church who have embarked on their quest to convert the world into the all American religion that is Mormonism. Elder Price believes he is set to do great things, to change the world and to go to Orlando…..? His main issue now is that he’s been coupled up a pathological liar who hasn’t even read the book and instead of Orlando they are going to Uganda, ...

Trial By Jury – Paradise at Augustines

Trial By Jury is a wacky 40 minute long operatic musical that centres around a bride being jilted at aisle by her cheating fiancé and the legal battle for compensation. The 1875  Gilbert and Sullivan musical is fast paced, fun and overall bizarre in parts with a twist in the end that had a handful of the audience audibly gasp “wait what?”, although I shall not spoilt it for you. Theatre company Cat Like Tread have produced their own production of the show well, giving us a bonny little cast and some very impressive vocals. Their vocals as a group hold well together and you can easily pickup on each of the individual harmonies without anyone taking over completely. There are some nice visuals throughout as the cast use the entire stage space and have simple but effective choreog...

Sh!tFaced Shakespeare: Much Ado About Nothing – Pleasance at EICC

Shakespeare is already a dramatic affair, especially when it comes to Much Ado About Nothing, but what happens when one of the play's leads is drunk? Sh!t Faced Shakespeare takes a cast of professionally trained Shakespearean actors and then gets one of them drunk leading to what can only be described as beautifully brilliant chaos. The cast must then attempt to perform a shortened performance of the chosen Shakespeare text whilst putting up with the drunken adlibs of their inebriated cast mate. To make things more interesting a different cast member will take on the role of the drunk each night along with a different character in the show, you are guaranteed that the show will be different every night of the run. The show is safe enough with the drunk being supervised at all ...

Antonio’s Revenge – C ARTS, C-Alto studio

Antonio’s revenge starts as it means to end with plenty of bloodshed and murder. Bad guy Piero Sforza has murdered Andrugio and Feliche junior with plans to marry Andrugio’s wife and gain more power in the process but first he must take care of Andrugio’s son/ his soon to be son in law Antonio. In this Elizabethan play written by John Marston one can expect:  violence, sex, revenge and some very impressive acting. The text as one can expect is like Shakespeare’s: hard to follow through word alone but the performance is so well acted and directed that these actors could be merely speaking the language of the Swedish Chef, and we would still have a clear idea as to what is going on. It’s fast paced and within the first few moments of the play we have our first death by poison and...

John Wayne Gacy, The Killer Clown: Born Evil? – theSpace @ Surgeons Hall

John Wayne Gacy the notorious serial killer, famous for the rape, torture and murder of at least 33 teenage boys in America during the 1970s. The community clown who’s home stood on the graveyard of his “alleged victims”, I use the word alleged as this word comes up multiple times throughout the show. This is not a show that sympathizes with Gacy by any means, instead it’s a one man show that tries to tells Gacy’s story as the man himself had narrated. Using quotes from Gacy’s interviews a 50-minute-long story time has been created. We are made to question: does one begin evil or are they made to be, was Gacy really a man of multiple personalities, deluded or a monster and manipulator? Our lead actor takes on the role of Gacy himself, donning an American Chicago accent and readin...

Well, these children are competitive and under pressure, pressure that may just come to a boiling point in this wonderfully feel good and nifty musical. Prepare yourself for almost 2 hours of pure laughter, charm and talent with this fun little musical. It’s true to say that when the cast is having fun so is the audience, you could tell that the team thoroughly enjoy the show and in doing so never miss a beat. We find ourselves watching the classic “odd balls” of societies youth: the nerd, the perfecti...

Three Of A Kind: A New Musical – Paradise in Augustines

Three Of A Kind is a new contemporary musical that follows the life of waitress Sam as she attempts to navigate work, love and caring for her sick mother. The score is completely original, and the musical has been created from scratch by Gregor Satti and Rebekah Holly Neilson. Story wise this is a rather classic musical theatre tale: girl who works as a waitress but longs for more meets boy and falls in love. In this tale Sam is having to work to care for her sick mother, when she meets Jamie, she begins to re-evaluate her life, but it seems Jamie is not the only man who intends to enter her life and change her world forever. There are many positive aspects to this show: the musical orchestration and composition being one. It is completely fresh and even without words you can fee...

Abi Clarke: (Role) Model – Pleasance Courtyard Beneath

Abi Clarke rose to fame overnight via a TikTok video that went viral, ever since she has been climbing the social media and stand-up comedy ladder, but with all this new found fame she is left with one major dilemma: does this mean that she should have to be a role model now too? In this rather funny stand-up comedy show Clarke addresses what it means to be a stereo typical “role model”, the limitations to being an influencer by trade and pressures that we women put on ourselves in this day and age. We learn about how fame has changed her as a person and question if one can truly be a role model when their favourite TV moments are those of pretty girls getting their hair chopped off on American’s Next Top model. Abi is a natural performer, her energy is infectious and she is just...

Mary Mary Quite Contrary – The Space On The Mile

Mary Mary Quite Contrary is a new comedy musical surrounding Mary Whitehouse and her prudish war against sex and sexuality being shown on the BBC. When Mary is told that her next job involves documenting swingers she is mortified, but as she learns why and how a swingers club works she begins to open up to the idea. After all every swingers club should end with a happy ending. The songs in this show are simple but enjoyable, the cast talented if a little nervous and the exclusivity is off the rails. Be prepared to learn something new about yourself and embrace the world of kink and self expression. We explore trans identity, a love of leather, obedience and dominance and that giving yourself over to pleasure is not in fact a fast track to the gates of hell. The show is witty and ...
