What a pleasure it is to step inside the beautiful philharmonic hall, Liverpool, steeped in history and class, this venue is totally unique and provides great variety when it comes to music and performances. This was exactly the case tonight when the striking stage which usually hosts the philharmonic orchestra was swapped for a huge pop throwback known as ‘Boyzlife’.
‘Boyzlife’ is made up of some familiar faces, Keith Duffy who rose to fame in Boyzone and Westlife’s original Brian McFadden. These two singers have joined forces in the last number of years to create their own music and of course, to relive the classics. Noting that they have 21 number one hits between them, this duo is no stranger to the stage and the world of pop music. Tonight marks the start of their ‘Old School Tour’ and from the audience response, it is clear that they still have a big following out there.
The show opened with Nashville-based pop artist Keelie Walker taking to the stage for a half hour warm up. Keelie’s sound and look is very modern and fun. It was great to see a new artist getting the opportunity to perform.
When ‘Boyzlife’ appeared, their reputation stood to them with the audience rising to their feet from the get-go. It was a pleasure to hear the songs we know and love performed live, “Don’t love me for fun”, “world of our own” “Oh Mandy” “when you’re looking like that” are just a few of the much-loved hits that were belted out with a few cheesy dance moves thrown in for good measure. The only thing missing was a stand up from the stool at the key-change!
Supporting the singers were an accomplished four-piece band and two backing singers. I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone that there were a few vocal tuning issues tonight however fans will always love Keith & Brian for who they are, their history, their reputation and everything they gave to the music industry over the years. The dancing, screaming audience did not appear to mind!
Adding fireworks and dramatic lighting created more entertaining, theatrical moments throughout this enjoyable show. Brian demonstrated strength in his vocals, particularly in his acoustic numbers. Boyzlife are actually producing music too and a number of new songs were played tonight, as well as a surprise ‘beach boys’ medley which went down a storm, the audience didn’t expect it, but loved it!
Of course, the night could not pass without a mark of respect the late Stephen Gately who passed away almost 13 years ago. Keith Duffy paid tribute to his bandmember saying that no show passes without remembering Stephen. Some kids from a local drama school joined the stage for this poignant and touching moment.
If Westlife & Boyzone have a place in your heart, this show is definitely for you. These two performers are a bit cheeky but definitely having a ball on stage which filters through to the audience who can’t help but have a good time! Thank you to the Philarmonic Hall for providing the stunning setting and for continuing to host genres for everyone!
