Thrilling. Breathtaking. Magical. Single words formed mentally in a gasp of disbelief. Words alone are inadequate to describe the hair-raising sensuality and trust, the courageous heights and the most extreme, humorous and beautiful physical collaboration brought to the stage by Brisbane-based Circa in this acrobatic fusion of Swan Lake and the Ugly Duckling stories.
The boundless precision and trust within this Australian circus troupe superglue to the memory in respect for the years of dedicated physical work each performer has devoted from the age of seven, eight, nine and upwards. The delicacy and explosive strength, the fearless acrobatics (in red high heels as far as the black swan is concerned) has such artistry, it is easy to see why this organisation has international backing.
Artistic Director, Yaron Lifschitz, says the company’s aim is “Circus that moves the world. [ … ] Some days we get close.” The respect for one another demonstrated through hours of diligent practice and trust culminates in a show of skill and faith in your fellow man (and woman) to keep you safe. The organisation of bodies in space is a microcosm of how humanity could cooperate successfully and expansively in the real world – if the will and desire were present. This ensemble explores mutual physical possibilities with daring and panache. They are outstanding artistes and story-tellers: bodies and minds in concentration and unison are humanity’s universal language etched in the air.

There is not a weak link. There couldn’t afford to be. It is dangerous.
And embracing this powerful chain of human precision and trust is a thumping great score. The “set” is ideal with its minimalist simplicity. The costumes are well considered. The lighting makes the very most of the mood and atmosphere. It is beautiful. It is rigorous. It is meticulous in every way. And that makes it awe-inspiring.
I am loath to pick out anyone for special mention as every single member of this troupe is astonishingly talented. However, for comic surprise, Luke Thomas as the Prince, took the audience by surprise when his deft elegance abandoned him unexpectedly.
Those lucky enough to attend Circa’s workshop a couple of days prior to the Edinburgh show met four of the cast. In addition to their stunning performances on Friday night, these trainers showed impressive care, support and humility as they nudged novices to have a go and discover they can physically do more than they knew. Everyone left that session with smiles on their faces, sharing experiences enthusiastically. We are all capable of more. Proving it to ourselves is uplifting.
This dynamic, innovative company deserves five stars and more. It is a family show that is guaranteed to entertain and thrill.
