The first thing that strikes you is the incredible attention to detail in the staging and lighting. It instantly transports you back to the rockabilly era, a time when rock ’n’ roll was exploding onto the music scene. There’s a real sense of authenticity in the way the period is brought to life, making you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and are right there experiencing the excitement of those early days of rock ’n’ roll. Million Dollar Quartet is centred on the 1956 recording session at Sun Records that encapsulates the coming together of 4 greats from the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis; an encounter brought about by Sam Phillips.
At the heart of this production is Darren Day’s compelling portrayal of Sam Phillips and Jerry Lee Lewis played by the unstoppable and incredible Joe Bence as the crazy provocative pianist. Joe Bence captures the characterisation of Jerry Lee Lewis to perfection. As Philips tries to calm’s Lewis, it proves tricky as this ambitious, yet mildly vulnerable man instinctively knows he needs get his lucky break. You will be dazzled by Carl Perkins, Jonny Cash and Elvis Preseley who make up this impressive quartet.
The first act felt a little slow to get going. It took some time for the production to find its rhythm. However, once the performers found their groove, the pace and energy really got going and the show began to feel much more cohesive. It was in the second act that the ‘roof came off’ and really got into its stride. The performances by all the cast were engaging, the energy lifted, and the significance of the story began to come through very strong. For audiences who may not be familiar with the story of the Million Dollar Quartet, it doesn’t take long to appreciate just what this one extraordinary meeting at Sun Records meant—not only to the four performers, but to the followers of rock ’n’ roll; the organic development of the music itself. What makes the story particularly fascinating is knowing that this was a meeting that happened almost by chance. And yet brought together four performers who would go on to leave such a lasting legacy on popular music.
Everything fits, the lighting the set and the performance. Million Dollar Quartet captures the essence of this remarkable story with creativity, energy and real flair. So, be prepared to shake those hips, tap your toes at the wonder, the splendour and the sheer musicianship on stage!
