‘Making Art for Art’s sake.’ A quote repeated almost too many times to count and yet, with each time spoken a new weight of how important independent vision truly is to human expression.
This film takes us through a spectacular exhibition, starting at Whistler’s early discoveries on page- slowly stretching into new and exciting fields to finally land on some of his work that have stood the test of time.
Alongside closer looks at his work, it is paired beautifully with letters sent by Whistler himself explaining his process. It is a wonderful thing to hear an artist express such light and excitement about the journey of artistry. Whistler would often journey into areas most would fear to go, we now have impressions of people who might never have had a chance to get a portrait and in result we see a true and much grimier side to London as we all truly knew it was. Whistler, without knowing moved into the early stages of what we know as ‘Impressionism’ today, shown ever so clearly in the quote ‘An artist is not paid for his labour but for his vision.’
To watch an exhibition, honestly wasn’t at the top of my list and definitely is not something I’ve done before however, it’s not too much to say that I’m forever changed in how I consume visual art. To hear from curators and historians first-hand about the details I am so oblivious to, completely changes your experience of the painting in front of you. The information was clear, increasingly interesting and paired beautifully with the visual media. I really truly feel changed by knowing Whistler more as a human being and not just the name on the painting. It was a beautifully connecting experience, one that I think we should all be eager to seek out more, particularly when art feels threatened by our technology age.
Something to take away? Remembering that art is a process, not to be rushed but to experience alongside your life. One of Whistler’s paintings took over 4 years to finish, and it is no less than a masterpiece. I think we can all learn a lot by looking back at the lives of these artists.
