White Bitch Bingo – Baron’s Court Theatre

Caroline Cole’s ‘White Bitch Bingo’ is less a stand-up comedy than a warm and fuzzy, confessional storytelling hour, wrapped around a game of bingo and sprinkled with just the right amount of audience interaction. Billed as an exploration of privilege, identity and the contradictions of modern America, it never becomes preachy, instead it relies on Cole’s natural warmth and self-deprecating humour to keep the audience firmly on side.

The bingo element proves to be the evening’s strongest theatrical device, and it gives the audience a genuine sense of participation creates an easy rapport and reminds us that everyone enjoys the simple thrill of winning and walking away with a prize! Those interactive moments inject welcome energy into what is otherwise an extended personal monologue.

Cole is instantly likeable, despite repeatedly introducing herself as the “worst white bitch”, and her homely charm carries material that occasionally feels more anecdotal than laugh-out-loud funny. The comedy is gentle and sentimental, somewhat familiar, with far more smiles than belly laughs, and while not every joke lands, particularly those rooted in distinctly American cultural references, enough of them do to keep the audience engaged and smiling.

The show’s weakness, though, is its pacing, and at just under an hour, there are moments where the storytelling begins to meander, and the material would arguably have had greater impact in a tighter 30-to-40-minute format. The concept itself is enjoyable, but a brisker rhythm would sharpen both the comedy and its underlying observations.

This isn’t a groundbreaking piece of comedy theatre, but it is an entertaining and personable one, and judging by the audience response, ‘White Bitch Bingo’ succeeds in creating a warm, communal atmosphere, feeling like a show that would flourish even more in front of a larger crowd, where the shared laughter and bingo antics could truly come alive.

‘White Bitch Bingo’ runs at Barons Court Theatre through to 5th August as part of Camden Fringe Festival and tickets can be found here: https://camdenfringe.com/events/white-bitch-bingo
