Shornima born in Nepal raised in Georgia America is a comedienne with a twist. She draws on her personal experiences from childhood trauma living in a boarding school during a civil war in Nepal, to relationships with friends, boyfriends and rejection from her parents. Her ability to conceptualise these personal challenges and reverse the psychology into comedy is impressive. Quick firing one liners and layers of storytelling packed full of realism of a life most would find deeply debilitating. The relevance of the ‘Me To’ movement, rape and therapy are part of what she deconstructs through her comedy hour.
Shornima is a writer for Saturday Night live, she has an extraordinary way of explanation that is unique and at times difficult to absorb, but this is her style, and it gets a laugh.
Her style of blended writing starts with a story which threads throughout. She ends her show with the story punchline, this is exceptional, there is no doubt in her talent for writing. This one-woman show is different and for an American comic to break through a UK audience is a tough nut to crack. At times you could tell Shornima felt the tension when her analogy of rape and emotional and sexual abuse was met with a subdued laugh. She cut through this with ease and acknowledged the audience’s response with respect.
The pair (Shornima and boyfriend) sparring over their ‘therapist’s’ insights was genius a funny piece of writing that could be a sitcom.
A feminist yes, tough Asian woman rising to stardom yes. Shornima is a contemporary comedienne with inner grit and resilience, her outer shell shines bright with each softly spoken joke.
