Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ‘n’ Roll – Leicester Square Theatre

Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ‘n’ Roll is a play with music that tells the story of legendary guitarist and songwriter Wilko Johnson, most famous for his work with the band Dr. Feelgood.

As someone unfamiliar with Johnson’s legacy before watching this, the show served as a striking introduction, not just to his music, but to the man behind it.

The play begins at a pivotal moment: Wilko being diagnosed with terminal cancer and given a year to live. Rather than retreating, he sets out on a final farewell tour, determined to go out doing what he loves. This sets the stage for a reflective memoir-style journey, as we’re taken back through his life, glimpses of his childhood, the formation of Dr. Feelgood, his creative process, and the personal moments that shaped him, including his marriage to Irene.

The production does a great job of highlighting the major beats of his life and showing how these moments forged the legend. It’s fast-paced yet intimate, and there’s a sincerity that anchors it throughout.

Johnson Willis delivers a strong performance as Wilko Johnson, capturing his distinctive voice, presence, and mannerisms with great care. However, one element that fell slightly short for me was the use of the same adult actors throughout every stage of Wilko’s life. It was jarring at times, for instance, seeing Willis portray young Wilko as a boy and teenager, especially in romantic scenes with a younger-looking Irene, played by Georgina Fairbanks. While both gave good performances, the lack of age-appropriate casting in these flashback scenes disrupted the illusion slightly.

That said, one of the strongest aspects of the show was the music. The live band was phenomenal, bringing energy and rawness to the stage. As the familiar riffs kicked in, the audience couldn’t help but sway along, some even singing under their breath. The decision to let the band perform a few full songs after the play ended was a real highlight—turning the theatre into a mini-gig and letting the music stand on its own.

Overall, Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ‘n’ Roll is a heartfelt tribute. For fans of Wilko Johnson or Dr. Feelgood, it’s a nostalgic and emotional experience. For those new to his story, it’s both an education and a celebration and an engaging way to learn about an artist who truly lived on his own terms.
