Cinderella – St Helens Theatre Royal

We all know the tale of Cinderella. Well, add a little sparkle and magic and you will find the cast of St Helens Theatre Royal and their portrayal. A wonderfully staged production which is bound to bring joy to many children and families over this Easter holiday.

The cast is comprised of Coronation Streets Kimberly Hart-Simpson who plays the wonderfully sweet and fun Cinderella, Ben Keith as the very handsome and wholesome Prince Charming. Back by popular demand as always with his high energy as Buttons, Lewis Devine. The fabulously funny, and gruesome twosome ugly sisters portrayed by Shania Pain and Richard Aucott. Conor Barrie as the lively and cheeky Dandini and finally Rachael Wood as the glittering and captivating Fairy Godmother.

This pantomime showcases some beautiful vocal talent especially from Rachael Wood who powerfully hits some difficult notes throughout the performance. But all the cast graced us with their solo or duet numbers and were delightful. There is plenty in this show to keep both adults and children entertained and many jokes which would go over the children’s heads but be thoroughly appreciated by the adults.

The staples of a pantomime such as audience participation, family favourite scenes etc which are familiar are of course there, that’s what makes a pantomime exactly that, however, the only criticism I would have regarding the performance is that as a regular pantomime goer and especially to St Helens, the jokes are very repetitive and I would have loved to see new material to keep it fresh and engaging, even for the regulars. The second act did provide newer material, but it would be great to see it throughout.

Costumes as always were sparkling, colourful and an absolutely stunning on the stage. St Helens always delivers with costumes and amazing staging. Sound and lighting was perfectly timed, provided much comedy with such timings and set the mood well for scenes. I did note that sometimes Cinderella sounded slightly muffled or quiet which may be due to microphone placement within her costume or headband. This was only very evident when she voice-overed off stage and was immediately very clear and loud. This however, seemed to be corrected for the second act.

The senior dancers were graceful and a joy to watch, with the added support from the juvenile dancers to add energy, fun and dazzle to the stage choreographed by Nazene Langfield.

All wrapped up in some toe tapping songs for all the family and you have one brilliant show. Make sure you catch it this Easter.

Cinderella runs from April 5th to Monday April 21st. Tickets can be purchased on https://www.sthelenstheatreroyal.com/show/873666028/
