Insane Productions brings a brand new show to the Edinburgh Fringe this year and this time it’s a little naughty, after all it’s taking place “after dark”.
The adult nature of this show has definitely been embraced, with suggestive emojis lighting the back walls in neon lights, drinking games and even the flashing of a phallus and balls.
It’s the magic element that the show seems to be lacking in.
Headlining the show we have 3 energetic and charming magicians who work together incredibly well. Their chemistry is electric and if this was purely a comedy show it would be on its way to a five star review however other than an impressive entrance trick (I shall not spoil it for you), the real magic of the show is done by their guest acts.
What is promised to be a magic show becomes 40 minutes of three men talking about tinder and playing games such as “cock or balls” with the odd “we knew you would say that” trick. The actual magic tricks are easy enough to work out how they were done and are often throw away endings.
The trick in which they build up throughout the whole show lacks lustre in its finale as you see exactly what’s going to pop out as the finale prop is wheeled back onto the stage and is in reality a repeat of the first trick of the show.
It must be noted that I personally am a fan of magic shows, this one just didn’t hit it’s intended mark nor did it leave me wondering how anything had been done.
As for the real show stealers, our 2 supporting acts leave us with the best impressions. First, we had comedy duo Kane & Abel the magician twins. Not only were they hilarious but the trick in which they chose to perform was impressive and well choreographed. (Find them at their solo show Magician Twinpossible).
Our second supporting act was Jeromaia Detto who created a symphony with his audience, quite literally. Without many words he has the whole audience howling whilst attempting to play air instruments. (Jeromaia also has his own show MUSH at the fringe too).
I believe the supporting acts change across the nights to showcase other performers.
Overall, the show is fun and a good laugh. The hosts are enjoyable to watch and this is certainly not designed for children! The only issue is: for a show called Insane Magic, there was barely any magic and the main show pieces were rather basic illusions than anything that could be described as insane. I would still recommend the show for a good night out with your friends.
