This was – A stunning and emotional performance.
Welcome to this beautiful little intimate theatre, clean leather seats nicely spaced and on a steep rake, and with a brilliant acoustic, probably the comfiest music venue in all of Edinburgh – and not a bad seat in the house! An expectant and responsive full house attended this first performance and were certainly not disappointed. The standing ovation that ended this show was never in doubt.
Hosted by the enormously talented Night Owl Shows duo of Hannah Richard’s and Alex Beharell, performing alongside the brilliant Night Owl Band who gave it their all this afternoon. Only their fifth gig of the day!
There is a clever use of different band members to talk about the brief history of the band, which makes you feel really connected to all of the musicians by the end of the show.
After a run through some earlier work, including Black Magic Woman and Albatross the show really kicks on with Beharell’s electrifying rendition of Go Your Own Way, which veers almost into punk with the amount of energy expended – watch that throat Alex, its only day 1!
However, it is Hannah Richard’s stunning vocal lament of Songbird, dedicated to the late great Kristen McVey which really touches everyone to the point of tears in the hushed auditorium.
Finishing with a superb and very youthful version of The Chain which sees the exuberant Richards pogo dancing around the stage it is great to see some rather old songs dressed in some bright new clothes. And how great they sound!
Recommended for old and young alike, this is going to be a sell out show, so buy tickets early folks. And bring some tissues! It’s emotional.
