We’ll Have Nun of It opens at The Other Palace

Sister Sister Productions proudly announces the electrifying premiere of We’ll Have Nun of It at London’s prestigious The Other Palace theatre on Thursday, 22nd February 2024, after a resounding triumph with ★★★★★ (Broadway World) sold-out performances at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2023.

Prepare to be swept away as We’ll Have Nun of It emerges as a poignant, genre-defying coming-of-age musical that fearlessly tackles the profound struggles of Irish emigration, sexuality, and faith. This ambitious production poses crucial questions about navigating the tumultuous journey into adulthood amidst a divided world, ultimately illuminating the unwavering power of sisterhood in the darkest of times.

The stage is set in 1967, a time of seismic change where a new contraceptive pill challenges societal norms, same-sex relationships find legal recognition, and second-wave feminism ignites. Amidst this cultural revolution, four friends at St Anne’s Convent School grapple with a transformative final year. But as opinions clash and emotions shift, their anticipated journey takes unexpected turns, revealing the complex tapestry of their intertwined lives.

Featuring an all-female and non-binary actor-muso cast, We’ll Have Nun of It delivers an immersive experience through a dynamic, multi-instrumentalist ensemble and an explosive original soul-folk score* that encapsulates the angst, joy, liberations, and frustrations of a sisterhood united by their shared struggles.

Inspired by real-life conversations with director-producer-writer Rosie Dart’s grandmother and composer-writer Finola Southgate’s mother, who both navigated the challenges of the 1950s and 60s, this ground-breaking production transcends time, resonating with audiences as it explores themes of home, identity, sexuality, faith, and the turbulent backdrop of Anglo-Irish relations.

Rosie Dart says, “At its core, the piece explores feelings of powerlessness to change the world. Just as in the 1960s, young people today remain frustrated to be growing up in an environment permeated with shame surrounding abuse of power, feminism, and sexuality. My grandmother and Finola’s mother’s stories still resonate, and we hope to inspire our audience to ask questions and seek answers.”

Producer Francesca Davies-Cáceres adds, “Since our sell-out production at the Fringe last year, we’ve amplified the piece, extending it to a gripping 90 minutes. Every lyric is meticulously crafted, rooted in pivotal moments of the story. Characters have been fleshed out, relationships organically developed, and a new opening number added, providing an insightful journey into the narrative.”
