When a show is running in London and on a national tour at the same time, you know there must be something special about that show.
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, but with different songs, the lively and fun Sister Act musical arrives in Birmingham this week for a short run.
This show tells the tale of wannabe singer Deloris Van Cartier. She inadvertently witnesses a murder and goes into protection in the most unusual of places, a church convent. Can she blend in with the nuns? Can anything improve their singing?
The stage was filled with strong vocal performances throughout from every singer. These were only matched by the characterisation of every part, from the enthusiastic young nun to the reliable policeman and everyone in between.
Landi Oshinowo was faultless as Deloris, with perfect comic timing and a voice that soared into the rafters and shook them. Eddie Souther (Alfie Parker) a quiet unassuming man had his moment in the spotlight, and what a moment! His number “I could be that guy” was a showstopper. Totally in the 70’s vibe are Curtis’s Crew especially when they show how they will try to get access to the convent. You really feel for Mother Superior (Sue Cleaver) as she tries to balance her duty to help one in need, when that person is disrupting everything, she holds dear. Of course, we have to talk about the Sisters. You can’t help but smile when they are on stage, each Sister with her own personality that shines out, especially during the musical numbers.
Although the staging was minimal, with small set pieces to indicate places, the lighting brought the set to life perfectly. It takes us from glitzy club to sombre church and back again effortlessly. They create the atmosphere of a cold, austere convent then in the blink of an eye you are in a colourful rowdy 70’s bar.
Joy and energy erupt from the stage with slick choreography and music that makes your toes tap. While there is plenty of humour, glitz and 70’s tight trousers, there is also an underlying message, people will surprise you if you give them a chance.
The Monday night audience were on their feet for this heavenly performance, it would be a sin to miss it.
