Pirates: You Wouldn’t Steal a Boat – Gilded Balloon Patter House

Pirates: You Wouldn’t Steal a Boat is a fast-paced comedy that embraces piracy on the high seas from the start and never comes in to port. A production from Spruce Moose Comedy, the show takes audiences on an “action-packed” pirate adventure. There is “nautical nonsense” galore. The journey is filled with treasure hunts, intriguing characters, and a Caribbean storm full of pirate genre. While the story itself is well trodden, a betrayed pirate setting out to reclaim treasure from his former captain, the production takes this repetition and turns it into something unique and magical.

The story follows Sharkbait Mulligan and his loyal intern Louie after they are betrayed by the double-crossing Captain Codpiece. Sharkbait and Louie set out beat their former captain to the  valuable treasure. The pair advertise and interview for a replacement crew to man their “rental pirate ship” and embark on a quest of increasingly hilarious adventures. The intrepid pair enlist the services of an exaggerated parody of Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Will Turner, “the real Orlando Bloom * (*not quite.)

Orlando, with a particularly accurate voice of his namesake, swoons about the performance space with ridiculous pathos. All the characters bought a piece of the pirate jigsaw to life. Codpiece with his carefully thought-out panto style double entendres. The young eager, confused and exasperated Mulligan. Louie, a painfully inept intern with a poor aim and finally but certainly not last, Stinky Pete. Pete relies on his “Pirates code” to stumble through this swashbuckling masterpiece.

The space is a basic theatre in the round but is transformed by using low-budget props and costume. Dodgy props, inflatable palm trees, and rudimentary weather effects become a superpower. The belief in the crafting and use of these props propels the overall charm.

The cast fit together wonderfully and their commitment to the partnership is noticeable. The energy is on point throughout the performance. Although some brief drops in pace sprung up, this will disappear as the run progresses. Their belief in the story helps elevate even the most absurd jokes to belly laughs.

Overall, Pirates: You Wouldn’t Steal a Boat is a mesmerising and end to end pirate romp. With impeccable comic timing from every cast member. You forget that you are in a performance space. You could very well be walking the plank on the Black Pearl and hunting for Treasure. A simply wholesome piece of excellent comedy.
