Once again, local music programming charity Soundhouse have graced the Traverse theatre with another act of outstanding renown: this time, the Espen Eriksen Trio.
This Norwegian jazz trio is composed of frontman Espen Eriksen on piano, Lars Tormod Jenset on double bass, and Andreas Bye on drums. With tranquil, lilting phrases, the Espen Eriksen trio bring a gentle approach to jazz, creating a completely dreamy and meditative soundscape.
The trio all possess that typical Norwegian wit, presenting their work with charm, managing to absolutely win the audience over with their dry quips and smart remarks. We really warmed to them as people and hence furthered our connection with their music.
My favourite track had to be the opener of course, bringing in the show with punch and optimism. The energy was electric, with the music marching through peaks and valleys – the trio were completely locked in to one another. As the set progressed, this intense energy drifted and we were lulled into a peaceful stupor. Bye’s drumming was understated but exactly what the music needed. With relaxed, persistent grooves and several well-placed fills his experience is clear. The band put it perfectly on their website: they take the “less is more” approach.
However, as the set continued, I did wish we had a few more upbeat numbers in the midst, only because that opening song was so enjoyable to hear. Tormod Jenset’s bass playing provided a lot of interest in the mix, using a light bowing technique that provided a very ambient timbre that melded seamlessly into the composition. Not only this, but his delight in playing absolutely shone through, with much of the drive in the music coming from him. And of course, Espen himself is wonderfully talented, giving a strong base for the trio to work with.
Using light melodies alongside rich chords, Espen really paints an incredibly dreamy picture. And having been so well received by the audience, it’s no wonder the Erik Espen Trio have had a career of such longevity. We even got a preview of some tracks that are to feature on their new album, recording in the Spring – and from the sounds of it, definitely an album to look out for.
