A powerful two hander which packs a punch with its raw and honest portrayal of two larger than life best friends, with some fatal consequences.
Nothing is off topic between best pals Cara and Kelly, inseparable soul sisters and best friends who each wear the other half of a heart necklace, a symbol of their friendship. Yet loyalties become blurred as their union is tested to its limits.
A friendship, which as we discover, inhabits cracks observed during their scathing arguments, which are littered with hurtful truths. A co-dependence is suggested by Kelly feeling put upon and burdened by Cara’s needs fueled by her broken family background and absent care givers. Their different socio-economic backgrounds become increasingly and painfully apparent.
Hanging out together having a laugh discussing music, netball, and boys, their conversations take darker turns with reflections on the concept of death, and identity, which is challenged by talented newcomer Sumaya. A Refugee, who we hear the girls view as different and therefore a threat. So, they do what they know best by verbally attacking and placing blame, in order to protect themselves and cover up their own insecurities.
The complexities and nuances in which these two characters operate from is superbly portrayed by Scarlett Stitt as Cara, and Isobel Thom as Kelly. Their natural chemistry makes for some explosive and emotive theatre. Heightened by the stakes at play. What could be annoying, gobby teenagers, is stripped back (literally) to two sensitive and frightened young girls.
The intimacy and close proximity of the Pleasance Bunker Three further amplifies the relationship by enabling an In-Yer-Face style raw and real performance of the emotional rollercoaster of these two pals. Protecting one another, to their own detriment.
Tigers, Not Daughters presents a piece of theatre which is realistic in its writing and perceptions, and therefore challenging and emotive to watch. A brilliant and deserving reflection.
