A Special Relationship – Tabard Theatre

Although described as a transatlantic comedy this new play by Tim Marriott and Jeff Stolzer is not about politics; there is only one joke about Trump! Rather, it explores what it is in language, habits and culture which separate the US and the UK. The setting is the Sussex Garden of Monty, an British colonel, played by Tim Marriott, whose daughter is marrying the son of Pete, an American plumber, played by Brian Dykstra.

Initially, the comedy is based upon the differences in linguistic usage between the two countries cupboard/closet, bathroom/ toilet etc. All familiar ground but amusingly delivered. More significant are the attitudes between the uptight British middle-class soldier and the much more laid-back American working man. Although Monty at first seems in control, insisting on paying for the wedding himself, as the play progresses his underlying demons and problems emerge and there turn out to be many more similarities between, he and his American “bro”.

The setting in the Tabard’s theatre was simple, with false grass and a wall at the back, and a flower bedecked trestle and wedding bunting. The only other stage furniture was a simple garden table and chair set. The playing area needed to allow enough room for the erection of a marquee which had been purchased, rather cheaply, by Monty whose initial attempts to erect it were reminiscent of Ayckbourn farce.

The two men were dressed to represent their contrasting personalities, the more formal Monty dressed in neat shirt, jumper and corduroy trousers while the American was much more casually dressed in colourful trousers, T-shirt and a shapeless jacket. The acting by both Marriott and Dykstra was excellent and they played off each other very well.

This is a delightful one hour of theatre, humorous but also moving. It is well worth seeing.
