Fitting the life story of a Grammy-award winning, two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee into a two-act musical is no easy task. But the current production of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, which is in residency over the 2025 Christmas period at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, is an emotional, gripping and entertaining production for both Tina Turner loyalists and those not as familiar with her work. Knowing that Tina was fully involved in the creation of the original West End production, and that she wanted to show both the highs and lows of her career, the show feels honest whilst feeling celebratory of the late legend.
Known for her energetic stage presence, iconic looks and truly unique soul-rock vocals – brining Tina Turner to the stage is a demanding role. As such, the production has two leading ladies in Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi and Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy who split the role across the tour run, with MacCarthy leading the production for press night. Powerful vocals, emotional depth and expert comedic timing make MacCarthy’s performance alone worth the price of admission. Her performance never ventures into feeling like a tribute act, instead MacCarthy is able to present the real Anna Mae who started singing in church back in Tennessee and had a difficult rise to fame. In the words of Tina – it was simply the best.
Given Turner’s back catalogue of hits, the production shines during the musical numbers. In addition to the note perfect vocals, choreographer Anthony van Laast created high energy on stage whilst incorporating some of Tina’s most memorable dance moves. With 23 musical number across the show – the book by Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins manages to weave in songs into key life moments, giving additional depth to the show. Possibly Turner’s biggest hit Proud Mary first appears in the show during a particularly dark moment in Tina’s story, the excitement of the audience for the song did take away from the emotional beat the production was trying to get across.
A supportive cast and ensemble helped MacCarthy to shine as the titular character. David King-Yombo as the infamous Ike Turner gives a fierce performance, quickly commanding the stage and handling some difficult scenes with skill. Whilst a smaller part, William Beckerleg plays Tina’s second husband Erwin Bach and brings some uplifting romantic moments in second act, a welcome relief after the tougher scenes of Turner’s relationship with Ike.
There are several musicals based on the careers of music superstars, and Tina – The Tina Turner musical can feel reminiscent of shows like Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, with some similar staple scenes. But being treated to a recreation of a Tina Turner concert at the show’s conclusion was a joy – with the entire audience on their feet for a mega mix of some of Tina’s biggest hits. With a standout lead performance and memorable musical numbers – Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is a great night at the theatre this festive season.
