The Brown Suite – Richmond Theatre

The Brown Suite where Soul Tells the Story: Six lives, One night, One dance floor.

It’s 1970 in New York city and over the course of one night, the dance floor becomes a stage within the stage: a place “where friendships shift, new connections emerge and long-held tensions finally begin to surface”. Soul and dance theatre brings six friends together in a city where music is more than entertainment, it is identity, release and survival. Choreographed to the music from James Brown, Sam Cooke and Etta James.

From the opening moments, The Brown Suite captures the pulse of a city that refuses to stand still. The atmosphere is charged with the spirit of New York’s soul scene, where movement speaks as loudly as dialogue. The dancers don’t simply perform the story; they embody it. A shoulder turned away becomes rejection. A hand reaching across the space becomes an invitation. A shared rhythm becomes intimacy. It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World; Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag; I Just Want To Make Love To You, plus many more songs tell the story through dance. The movement incorporates ballet, modern and social dances which forms into artistic expression.

“Wow!” The artistry by Nahum McLean and Darius Drooh bursts onto the stage with infectious rhythm, irresistible pizzazz and effortless style, capturing the imagination and commanding your undivided attention from the very first beat.  Joshie Harriette’s lighting reflects imagery on to the dancers that electrifies their performance to another level. The scene during the girls’ interactions in the bathroom and low pass filtered sound. of heavy bass shows the meticulous attention to detail. The dancers synthesised scene changes is an astonishing piece of theatre.

This production is short and will surprise audiences expecting spoken dialogue. It would be prudent to read the reviews and background to The Brown Room before going. It will not suit some audiences ‘relying on the narrative to inform them of what is happening’.

If you love James Brown, Funk, Jazz and Dance; or even if you don’t; this show will touch your soul leaving you rejuvenated and ready to jump onboard the Night Train……!
