But in reality, it’s an absolute triumph of creativity, talent, and quick-thinking, you are genuinely in for a treat.

The performance begins with Dylan Emery playing the role of a writer tasked with creating a brand-new musical from scratch in just two hours. From the outset, the audience becomes a central part of the process. We’re invited to shout out ideas for the theme of the show, with suggestions ranging from “White Lotus” to “crisps escaping from a bag” to “a dysfunctional parents’ evening.” After narrowing down the options, the audience votes by cheering, and the winning theme, on this occasion, “dysfunctional parents’ evening,” becomes the foundation of the entire performance.

The interaction doesn’t stop there. We’re also asked to suggest musical styles, with nods to shows like Hairspray and Guys and Dolls shaping the tone of different numbers throughout the evening. This level of audience participation is not only engaging but genuinely exciting, you feel invested in how the story unfolds because, in a small way, you’ve helped create it.

What follows is nothing short of remarkable. The cast take to the stage and, alongside a live band, build a fully formed musical in real time. The performers are exceptional, displaying not only vocal and comedic talent but an extraordinary ability to listen and respond to one another. Pippa Evans stands out in particular, commanding the stage with confidence and wit, but every cast member contributes to the seamless flow of the story.

What truly impresses is how polished it all feels. Despite being entirely improvised, the show has the structure, pacing, and musicality of something carefully rehearsed. The performers’ experience shines through in their ability to pick up cues, develop running jokes, and weave together a coherent narrative on the spot. Meanwhile, the band deserves equal praise, expertly adapting to each scene and musical style, enhancing the emotion and energy of every moment.

In the end, Showstopper! doesn’t feel like an improvised musical at all, it feels like a perfectly crafted one. And the best way to truly appreciate the cast’s skill is to see it again, knowing that no two performances will ever be the same.
