Robin Hood – New Wimbledon Theatre

Christmastime always brings with it the joyful traditions of British pantomime, and each year theatres across the country welcome new celebrity cast members to add sparkle to the season. This year, New Wimbledon Theatre presents a lively and colourful production of Robin Hood, made all the more exciting by the appearance of the hugely talented dance group Diversity. Their presence alone elevates this pantomime into something uniquely energetic and memorable.

The show follows the familiar story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men as they steal from the rich to give to the poor, all while the villainous Sheriff plots to capture the hero. While the narrative remains classic panto fare, the production values make it feel fresh and engaging. The sets are beautifully designed, bursting with vibrant colours that transform the stage into a fairy-tale world. Every backdrop feels purposeful and they bring a real sense of magic to the performance.

The costumes are equally impressive. Each piece is crafted with care and matches the colourful, whimsical tone of the show. The spooky ghost costumes enhance the eerie moments, while the elegant ball gowns in the finale add a touch of spectacle and highlight the celebratory atmosphere. Together, the costumes and sets create a visually stunning experience that keeps the audience delighted throughout.

Music is another standout element of the production. The song choices are playful and clever, including a fun nod to the Shrek franchise with the iconic “Oh Merry Men” tune. The ghost scene is a particular highlight, featuring the Merry Men dressed as Ghostbusters, complete with the famous theme song, which had the audience roaring with laughter. These musical choices show real thought and add to the overall fun of the show.

Diversity’s involvement brings a dynamic edge to the performance. Their dance numbers are high-energy, precise, and thoroughly entertaining, exactly what audiences expect from such a renowned group. While they are not primarily known for acting, any occasional mispronunciations or timing slips only contributed to the humour of the evening. The cast handled these moments with charm, turning them into comedic gold that left the audience howling.

Overall, this Robin Hood pantomime is a triumph of colour, comedy, and creativity. Diversity are a true highlight, but every element, from the sets to the music, comes together to create a festive experience that feels both traditional and refreshingly modern. It’s a joyful, spirited production that captures exactly what a Christmas pantomime should be.
