Nutcracker – Tuff Nutt Jazz Club

Drew McOnie’s latest choreographic endeavour, ‘Nutcracker’, is a contemporary dance show that breathes new life into the beloved festive classic. In a bold departure from tradition, McOnie’s production takes audiences on a wild-spirited adventure that is as delicate and sophisticated as it is daring and mature, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic holiday ballet. This reimagining, staged at the brand-new venue, Tuff Nutt Jazz Club within London’s Southbank Centre, is not only a feast for the eyes but a celebration of diversity and self-acceptance that opens the door to those who may have previously felt excluded from the magic of “The Nutcracker.”

One of the most striking features of McOnie’s rendition is its redefined cast of characters. Clara, typically portrayed as an upper-class young girl, is now Clive, a young boy. The cherished Nutcracker doll has been transformed into an Action Man figure. Central to the story is Clive’s heartwarming relationship with his single father, who is depicted as a hardworking parent struggling to provide for his child and also accept him for who he is. This shift not only modernizes the narrative but also emphasizes the importance of family dynamics and resilience in the face of adversity.

Choreographer Drew McOnie has managed to strike a balance between preserving the traditional elements of “The Nutcracker” and presenting the material in a contemporary and fresh styling. The choreography, executed with precision and grace, demonstrates McOnie’s artistic vision while paying homage to the original piece. Tuff Nutt stage, designed by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting by Joshie Harriette provides an up-close and personal vantage point that places the audience inches away from the dancers. The absence of the traditional proscenium arch adds an element of immediacy and intimacy that is both engaging and immersive.
