Blackpool Grand Theatre has launched its Christmas season with a sparkling, joy-filled production of Nativity! The Musical—a show that bursts with festive cheer from the very first moment. Adapted from Debbie Isitt’s much-loved 2009 film, this stage version manages to capture all the warmth and humour of the original while embracing the unique magic that only live theatre can bring.
Film-to-stage adaptations can sometimes feel like carbon copies, but this one never does. Instead, it strikes a perfect balance between staying faithful to the beloved storyline and introducing theatrical touches that make it feel fresh, lively, and wonderfully immersive. It understands exactly why audiences love the film and elevates those moments with clever staging, expressive choreography, and infectious energy.
The plot follows the familiar journey of Paul Maddens, a slightly weary primary school teacher reluctantly tasked with directing his school’s Nativity play. A spur-of-the-moment lie to his old school rival—claiming Hollywood producers are flying in to watch the show—spirals into total festive chaos as the rumour spreads across the town. With the help of his overenthusiastic classroom assistant and a group of excitable pupils, he must somehow turn the madness into a Christmas miracle.
The performances across the board are outstanding. The actor portraying Mr Maddens brings a gorgeous blend of vulnerability and warmth to the role, perfectly capturing the character’s frustration, hope, and heart. The performer behind Mr Shakespeare delivers a deliciously smug, comedic foil that heightens every scene they appear in. But it’s the actor playing Mr Poppy who truly steals the show, delivering a whirlwind of infectious energy, impeccable comedic timing, and a childlike innocence that lights up the stage every time he bounds into view.
The children’s ensemble is equally charming. Their sheer enthusiasm radiates through the theatre, creating moments of genuine sweetness and laugh-out-loud unpredictability. Any tiny missteps or off-key lines only deepen the authenticity, making the audience feel as though they’re genuinely watching a chaotic, loveable school play. Even occasional technical hiccups with lighting or sound enhance the illusion rather than detract from it.
Packed with humour, heart, and festive sparkle, Nativity! The Musical at Blackpool Grand Theatre is a joyous celebration of everything we love about this time of year. It’s feel-good, warm, and wonderfully uplifting—the perfect family outing to ignite the Christmas spirit. Don’t miss your chance to experience it.
