My Left Nut – Edinburgh Fringe

Based on a true story, this is a beautifully constructed and life affirming coming of age monologue set in Northern Ireland.

Michael (performed and co-written by Michael Patrick) gives a magnetic and warm performance as a teenager who discovers that he has an enlarged left testicle. Having lost his father, he finds it difficult to explain his condition to his mother and even more so with his school mates.

Michael’s story, even with its underlying health scare scenario, is both charming and significant. It’s basically a story about masculinity and the on-going battle to face up to personal trauma whilst still manoeuvring through those tricky and often awkward teenage years.

Director and co-writer Oisin Kearney gets a great physical performance from Patrick as he tells his story of growing up and facing his “moment(s) of truth”.  Quick mention must go to the excellent camerawork throughout; it ideally matches Patrick’s vigorous performance.

As a subject matter, it doesn’t sound as if it should work that well, but Patrick and Kearney really invest a lot of imaginative energy into this monologue, and it shows in the end result.

In short – fresh, funky and very entertaining.

Presented by Pan Narrans Theatre in association with Prime Cut Production, My Left Nut is available on demand at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival website https://www.summerhall.co.uk/sh-event/my-left-nut-michael-patrick-oisin-kearney/
