A wonderful, vibrant, colourful evening of song and dance this evening at The Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
Encore Productions brought us an array of local talent taking us on a journey of the classic story that we all know from the movie of the same name. The show follows the character Elle Woods on a journey from a Barbieesque sorority girl, to attending Harvard law school, in the hopes of winning back her ex-boyfriend.
With choreography and musical direction from industry professionals the cast were in good hands, Natalie Pollard provided creative routines and ‘Whipped the dancers into shape’ Ed Rugman ‘used the talented singers to provide a well rounded, strong ensemble with nice clean harmonies. The cast were full of energy and some outstanding performances this evening that would not be out of place in a professional production.
A couple of teething problems and technical issues in parts, to be expected on opening night, this did mean at times we lost some lyrics and dialogue, but it didn’t detract from the enjoyment. I also felt at times diction and projection were an issue, maybe something to watch for the rest or the week. Costuming, wigs and accessories were also hit and miss, mostly great but a few things needed more attention to detail.
Elle-Louise Moore as Brooke Wyndham was great in the role, a stunning triple threat performance and such energy during her heavily aerobic routines.
The delta new trio, Laurienne Imeson, Sarah Collinge and Kassidy Kiernan were very strong. As was Joff Keelan as the Professor.
A lovely touch using 2 real dogs for the show, the audience loved them. Jenny Danes as Paulette was incredible in both character and vocal.
But the take home performance was the front lady herself Aimee Duxbury as the likeable Legally Blonde, Elle Woods, truly a masterclass in vocal musical theatre, we shared every emotion, a beautiful vibrato and a believable chemistry with Emmett (Blue Blezard) The role just seemed to be second nature for her.
‘So much better’ was a showstopper bringing act 1 to a close.
I cannot express enough how hard this team has worked, if you can go see it, you won’t be sorry.
The show runs through to Saturday 9th March 2024, don’t miss out.
