Moira Buffini’s Handbagged has been revived and brought back to the stage and is currently at The Lowry as part of its UK Tour.
Directed by Alex Thorpe; this revival is as sharp, funny, and thought-provoking as ever. Exploring the imagined private conversations between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher, the play deftly balances political satire while exploring power, duty, and legacy from these two iconic women in UK’s history.
The brilliance of Handbagged lies in its unique dual-casting, with two actors playing each of the leading figures at different points in their lives. Morag Cross delivers a commanding performance as the older Thatcher, bringing both steely determination and flashes of vulnerability to the role. Emma Ernest, as the younger Mags, captures the rising politician’s ambition with remarkable intensity. Opposite them, Sarah Moyles’ older Queen is wonderfully composed, offering wry humor and quiet authority, while Helen Reuben’s younger Liz beautifully conveys the monarch’s sense of duty in contrast to her growing frustration with her Prime Minister.
Buffini’s script remains razor-sharp, filled with wit, biting commentary, and moments of unexpected warmth. The script is full of both tension and humor, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with the political backdrop will be hooked. Thorpe’s direction keeps the pace lively, ensuring the play never loses its energy or impact.
Katie Lias’ set design is both inventive and symbolic, with a giant coin as the focal point, representing power, money, and the ever-turning wheel of history.
Adding a sense of nostalgia; the supporting cast brings multiple historical figures to life, from Ronald Reagan to Denis Thatcher, with seamless transitions and great comedic timing.
Handbagged is a clever, insightful, and hugely enjoyable production that remains as relevant as ever. With stellar performances, a sharp script, and inventive staging, this revival at The Lowry is a theatrical triumph not to be missed on its current UK Tour.
