Evita Too – Zoo Southside

ZOO Southside’s Main House is a wonderfully generous Fringe venue, a huge wide stage, properly raked seating and not a bad view in the house. In fact, the stage is so large and voluminous that you could probably roller skate around it naked if you wanted to. Sh!t Theatre, it turns out, wanted to.

Rebecca Biscuit and Louise Mothersole are one of the funniest double acts at this year’s Fringe. I’ve seen Sh!t Theatre many times before and they never disappoint. EVITA TOO gives them an unusually expansive playground, and they use pretty much all of it.

Their starting point is Isabel Perón, Juan Perón’s third wife and the woman who succeeded him as President of Argentina in 1974, becoming the first female president of any country in the world. Yet ask most of us about a Mrs Perón and there is only one name that comes immediately to mind.

Perhaps the cleverest joke here is also the most serious. Women are not merely misremembered, they are “Mr-remembered”. History has largely been written through a masculine narrative and Sh!t Theatre gleefully set about unpicking it.

The timing makes the point deliciously. While Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were busy turning Eva Perón into Evita, another Mrs Perón was actually President of Argentina. Somehow the mega-musical found the dead Mrs Perón and completely missed the living one running the country.

Of course, this is Sh!t Theatre, so a potentially serious piece of historical revisionism is never going to become a lecture. Biscuit and Mothersole attack the subject with songs, documentary investigation, visual absurdity, a life-sized corpse puppet and, yes, naked roller skating. Their chemistry remains irresistible, the apparent chaos underpinned by the confidence of two performers who know each other and their audience extraordinarily well.

And, as usual, Sh!t Theatre are like a dog with a bone. They find an idea, gnaw at it well beyond the point where anyone sensible might have stopped, and inevitably end up somewhere quite unexpected.

I’m certainly not giving away where EVITA TOO eventually takes us. Let’s just say this is one show where it is definitely worth staying until the end.
