End of the Rainbow – Soho Theatre

Jinkx Monsoon takes on the role of Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow, delivering a performance that is both captivating and emotionally devastating. Best known by many for their drag artistry and sharp wit, Monsoon proves themself to be an exceptional dramatic performer, embodying Garland with remarkable precision. From the mannerisms and vocal delivery to the emotional vulnerability beneath every scene, the portrayal feels deeply authentic and heartbreakingly human.

The production itself is brilliantly written, refusing to romanticise Garland’s final years. Instead, it presents an unflinching look at a beloved icon struggling with addiction, exhaustion, and the crushing pressures of fame. At times, the show is genuinely difficult to watch, not because it lacks quality, but because it so effectively exposes Judy’s pain. The anger, swearing, emotional outbursts, and desperation all reveal a woman losing control of her life while desperately trying to maintain the image the world expects of her.

Monsoon’s performance captures this conflict perfectly. There are moments where Judy becomes frustrating, entitled, and even unlikeable in the way she treats those around her, yet the audience never loses sympathy for her. The production highlights not only Garland’s extraordinary talent, but also the devastating impact addiction can have on a person and those closest to them.

Another beautiful element of the production is its structure. Set during Judy Garland’s London residency, the play moves seamlessly between scenes in her hotel room and moments on stage performing for the audience. These transitions almost feel like a miniature Judy Garland concert, cleverly breaking the fourth wall and immersing the audience in the atmosphere of her live performances.

Watching such a legendary star unravel is horrifying at times. Seeing Judy arrive late, forget lyrics, and struggle through performances because of drugs and alcohol is deeply tragic. Yet even in these moments, the production reminds us why the world adored her. Musical numbers including Over the Rainbow and Get Happy are performed magnificently by Monsoon, with Over the Rainbow proving especially emotional and leaving many audience members visibly moved.

Overall, End of the Rainbow is a heartbreaking but beautifully crafted portrayal of Judy Garland’s final chapter. Led by an outstanding performance from Jinkx Monsoon, it offers a powerful glimpse into the personal struggles behind one of entertainment’s most iconic voices.
