Luke Bayer. Remember the name.
If you combine the tongue-flicking rubber faced brilliance of a young Jim Carey, the bottom-burp comedic appeal of Rick Mayall, and the sharpness of super-smart baby Stewie of Family Guy, well…. You might just about have the voice, but nowhere near the energy of the nuclear-powered, AI-chipped, water-slurping machine that is Luke Bayer.
Probably best known for his work in the original West End cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, or for appearing on X Factor in 2007, making it through to Dannie Minogue’s judges houses, but at 15 too young to go any further.
Now is his time. And this IS the show.
What a voice. Or should I say four voices to be exact. Here’s your character list;
Desmond Channing (voice see above)
The DIVA himself. Writing this from hell, for reasons which will become apparent, in time. Previously president of the Ronald Reagan High School drama club, and the star of every musical at the school, like forever. That is until the new kid shows up…..
Evan Harris (Justin Timberlake inspired movement with the voice of The Fonz)
The new, ripped, cool kid. Just arrived and wants to join the drama club. Yeah right! But, hey, this kid is seriously cool, and he knows how to pull the chicks! AND he studied drama before in NYC.
Allie Hewitt (Lisping almost inaudible, hunched, shy, like a cloud with legs)
Stage manager and downtrodden dogsbody, lisping and fawning and in love with Channing since first grade, as if he cares! The audience favourite.
Mr Dallas (deep voice and with a leaned-back paunch, expressive arms)
The theatre teacher and Director.
When he is in Desmond DIVA mode watch out. Nobody is safe. Now I understand why the drummer is behind glass, although he still gets whipped with a toy sword. The pianist and guitarist cower in a corner trying not to look at him but giggling uncontrollably for most of the show. They get suitably roasted, as does the front row.
If you like your musicals packed full of Easter eggs, clever asides, super sharp wit and stunning music in an intimate setting, this is the show for you. Don’t miss it!
