The classic saying always favours the book over the film of story but when a book comes off the back of a musical, then that musical has got to be next level.
Dear Evan Hansen therefore comes with a calibre. The show is the blueprint that went to Broadway before Hollywood film sets and so future renditions can sometimes be overshot with assumed greatness.
Instantly this performance was not that. What I noticed first was that the story was the main character rather than the individual performers which so often occurs during ‘big’ shows.
I say it every time I go to the Empire, but that theatre is a big space that demands a strong stage presence. This cast were instantly electric, purposeful and slick that captured me and the packed seats three tiers high.
Ryan Kopel’s Evan was delicate but driven, being careful not to over-play Americanisms or stereotypical mannerisms. He was believable and his voice was even more powerful.
The music makes this musical so renowned and I was so eager for this performance to do the score justice. They more than succeeded. Their collective sound was thick, forward, it touched every wall and got the back of your throat, it was awesome no word better describes it.
Each character brought a certain freedom and openness to their roles, with Alice Fearn’s Heidi
Hansen bringing a gruff that I didn’t know the character needed and Tom Dickerson’s Jared Kleinman adding that trusting comic relief that flowed smoothly and effortlessly.
The set was a modern frame this show needed too. Imaginative lighting, sound and video design provided intricate detail that kept your eyes moving and naturally mirrored the unpredictability of today’s online landscape.
Act One was a powerhouse that kept the audience trusting and believing in the lives portrayed onstage which gave the cast the momentum they needed for the softer second Act. The standing ovation at the end said it all.
Everyone needs to see this cast perform this show. They are performing at the Liverpool Empire until Saturday 16th November before moving on to other locations around the UK.
