Copla: A Spanish Cabaret – The Other Palace

The intimate setting for this one DIVA show was not to be underestimated. The prelude music set the mood but not the tone or what was to be unleased on the audience.  

What is Copla? A question people could not answer and until now. Alejandro introduced himself to the audience before walking onto the stage. He embarked on a journey of personal self-discovery, an education into Spanish politics under the regime of Franco, Catholicism and of course the music.  This was a story about life in Spain as a gay man, his roots in the LGBTQ+ community with the influences, the censorship which impacted his life and that of others around him. Video projections peppered the performance with Spanish, and English Diva’s sharing their versions of the songs of the music of Copla intertwined with Alejandros’ explanation told by words and song.  

Copla: A Spanish Cabaret s is an impactful show it leaves no room for your conscience, to not acknowledge the political message. He brings humour in his stand up, cabaret in his music, drag from the heart. This is a history lesson you didn’t expect, humbling, resilient and confidently performed.    

There were some delays to the video segway, however it should be acknowledged that in a one-man show time must be given to costume changes and props, this did not distract from the performance, on the contrary respect given to Alejandro’s versatility. You are charmed by his storytelling and no excuses determination to tell this story. 

The musicians sleek and on point intuitive of course ‘rehearsed’ complimented the show with robust rhythms and subtle tones.

A standout piece was Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music rendition of ‘Do Re Mi’ in English and then translated into the Spanish version reworded for the Spanish audience, fascinating.     

A ‘beautiful’ theatre piece that will charm and educate audiences alike, this story felt like it needed to be told and so it was with humility passion and true grit. He was slightly upstaged by his 101yr grandmother, what sheer genius.
