Absolutely! One-Liner Jokes! – Braw Venues @ Grand Lodge

Slow and relaxed aptly describes this hour of comedy from Kevin O’Brian. Absolutely! One-Liner Jokes! explores some of the most important aspects of life, from family and relationships to jobs and hobbies, or, as Kevin puts it, “jobbies”. Aptly named, the show delivers exactly what it promises: a simple hour of contextualised one-liners, delivered one after another, gradually building a narrative around each of these fundamental aspects of life.

Located in the Committee Room at 96 George Street, the historic setting felt perfectly suited to the pace and atmosphere of the show. Whether it was because of the 22:00 start time or simply the fact that it was a Monday night, the audience appeared to skew towards an older demographic, with the average age seemingly around 65. However, this did not make the show inaccessible to younger audiences; in fact, quite the opposite. Despite the age of the audience, the comedy felt almost ageless. Every joke that required context was given exactly that, which was particularly impressive to watch. I never felt as though I was left to guess what was being joked about. Instead, Kevin confidently guided the audience towards each punchline and delivered it effectively.

The show is well structured, despite Kevin relying on a few pieces of scribbled notes on A4 paper. What it lacks in presentation, it more than compensates for with its intimate and relaxed atmosphere. The informal nature of the performance felt entirely appropriate for the material and the audience. This is not criticism; rather, it felt like exactly what the show wanted to be: a comedy performance that does not take itself too seriously. The stripped-back presentation helped create a relaxed atmosphere, and after a few drinks, you could almost imagine yourself sitting in your lounge listening to your funny uncle tell one-liner jokes. Given the beautiful historic venue and the laid-back tone of the material, this atmosphere worked remarkably well.

Kevin is clearly an experienced comedian, and there is no denying his ability to command a room. He was confident and charismatic, and the jokes were delivered professionally despite the deliberately unpolished presentation. His experience is evident in his achievements, including being runner-up for Best Joke of the Edinburgh Fringe 2025, opening for Phil Ellis’s Soppy Stern Show, and being listed among the Top 10 Jokes of the Leicester Comedy Festival in 2026. His place as a finalist in the Silver Stand-up Competition at the Leicester Comedy Festival in 2025 further demonstrates his ability to hold his own within a competitive comedy scene.

Ultimately, One-Liner Jokes! is an enjoyable and accessible comedy show that knows exactly what it wants to be. It is quick, silly, occasionally musical, and packed with jokes. If you enjoy traditional one-liners, sharp observations, and comedy that does not overcomplicate things, this is a show worth catching.
