A Night at the Musicals – Peebles Orchestra

Peebles Orchestra was founded by Claire Garnett, MBE, in 1976. Claire was its guiding spirit for forty-two years before she handed over this tremendous pool of talent to the chair, Chris Dubé. Claire has been fundamental in establishing a solid musical base in Peebles. She founded Peebles Players for people with disabilities and music for dementia in care homes. Her legacy does her proud.

A Night at the Musicals was Peebles Orchestra’s latest offering on Saturday evening. Chris Dubé, his hard-working vice-chair, Annelies van den Bogaard and the entire orchestra relished the opportunity to partner with local youth and adult groups: Stardust, InChorus, Nomad Beat, and two gifted young soloists, Gregor Scott, fifteen, and Erika Rae Franssen, seventeen. Conducted by Ross Gunning, this ensemble was joyfully led. It was a true community celebration and a platform for young talent to practice and hone their performance skills.

The refurbished Burgh Hall was packed with friends and family for this departure from Peebles Orchestra’s traditional classical concerts. Highlights included The Phantom of the Opera Medley and a wonderful rendition of Maria from West Side Story by Gregor Scott. Erika Rae Franssen didn’t disappoint with As Long as He Needs Me. The youngsters from Stardust sang their hearts out. A small boy shone in his musicality. He didn’t have a solo spot, but his whole body was at one with the music, and he was a joy to watch.

While the orchestra soared with sound, it was difficult to see them as they were on the same level as the audience.  They worked hard to support the vocalists. I would have liked more purely orchestral music. The players are worth their weight in gold.

I particularly liked InChorus’ rendition of Sunshine on Leith with its strong male vocals. The final Proclaimers song, I’m Gonna Be was rousing. It was concluded with the surprise entrance of a piper. Needless to say, this brought the crowded room to its feet for a standing ovation.

There are several fiftieth anniversary events taking place next year: Orchestra for All will perform on 28th February – free to join; the Golden Jubilee Concert takes place on 23rd May; Come and Sing Verdi Requiem is scheduled for 6th September; and the Autumn Concert takes place on 14th November.
