Wake is an exhilarating variety production by Irish theatre company THISISPOPBABY, showcasing an eclectic mix of talent and movement. The show features everything from Riverdance-inspired footwork and tap dancing to balloon dancing, acrobatics, pole dancing, strip teases, and breakdancing. It seamlessly blends traditional Irish music with club classics, creating a vibrant, unexpected fusion that feels both nostalgic and cutting-edge.
I went into the performance with scepticism, unsure of what to expect. As it opened with traditional folk music, my doubts remained. But then—the beat dropped, a breakdancer took centre stage, and suddenly, the party had begun.
One of the show’s greatest strengths was its unpredictability. It was packed with comedic moments that had the audience in fits of laughter, but it also delivered spellbinding sequences where the music and movement commanded absolute attention. Some acts were high-energy and explosive, while others were mesmerizing in their grace and precision. The soundtrack was a particular highlight, striking the perfect balance between Irish folk tunes and pulsating club anthems. The live band transported us to the warmth of a countryside pub, only for the beats to whisk us away to an Ibiza dancefloor. It was a wild contrast that worked brilliantly and kept the audience engaged throughout.
Interestingly, I’ve never been particularly drawn to poetry, but the spoken word segments in Wake were captivating. Delivered with clarity and conviction, they reminded us of the fleeting nature of life—enhancing, the surrounding spectacle of dance and acrobatics. The poetic moments provided an emotional core, adding depth to what could have otherwise been purely a high-energy experience.
The visual elements of the show were equally striking, with bold lighting and inventive staging that enhanced each performance. Costumes ranged from their funeral outfits to the risqué.
Wake was truly one of a kind, and I only wish it had a longer run. If you ever get the chance to see it, go in with no expectations—just be ready to be amazed. Because the sheer variety of talent on display made Wake feel like a true celebration—not just of Irish culture, but of artistic expression in all its forms.
