This Is Not a Happy Room – King’s Head Theatre

This is not a Happy Room is a new play written by and starring Rosie Day. It explores family dynamics, the ways families drift apart, and how they reconnect when brought together for major life events—such as a wedding and a funeral. Through witty dialogue and engaging performances, the play captures the complexity of sibling relationships, unresolved tensions, and the bittersweet nostalgia of shared memories.

The story revolves around a family gathering for their father’s wedding to his new girlfriend. However, as he fails to arrive on time, his children begin to question his whereabouts while also rediscovering their relationships with one another. As they navigate awkward reunions and unspoken resentments, the audience is drawn into the emotional highs and lows of their interactions.

Each character has a distinctive personality that makes them memorable, with sharp wit and comedic timing. Jonny Weldon, who plays Simon, is a major hypochondriac, earning plenty of laughs whenever he dramatically laments his hardships or exaggerates minor ailments. One standout moment was the performance of Agadoo, which he hilariously delivered alongside Rosie Day and Andrea Valls. Their spontaneous performance was not only funny but also a touching reminder of the way nostalgia can momentarily bridge emotional gaps.

The play is cleverly crafted, intertwining individual storylines with quick one-liners and sharp humour that kept the audience engaged. Alison Liney, portraying the aunt with dementia, was particularly amusing as she wandered the stage, often unsure of where she was meant to be or what she was supposed to be doing.

Overall, This is not a Happy Room is an entertaining production, packed with humour and unexpected twists that felt reminiscent of a soap opera. While the final moments attempted to introduce a more serious tone, which slightly detracted from the comedic flow and energy, the show did remain an enjoyable experience from start to finish. The play expertly balances humour with moments of genuine emotion, making it a heartfelt and engaging watch.
