The Girl on the Train – The Lowry

Bringing a psychological thriller to the stage should create an atmosphere of tension and intrigue, but The Girl on the Train struggles to maintain the suspense that made the novel so compelling. While the adaptation is faithful to the source material and the performances are solid, the production lacks the gripping intensity needed to keep audiences engaged.

The script efficiently condenses the book’s plot, ensuring that key events unfold at a steady pace. However, the rapid transitions between scenes leave little room for suspense to build. The mystery remains intact, but it feels more like a retelling of events rather than a story unravelling in real time. Moments that should feel tense or shocking often pass without much weight, making it difficult to feel fully invested in the twists and turns.

Visually, the staging is effective, with clever lighting and projections used to represent shifting perspectives and memories. However, in a larger theatre setting, these effects struggle to create the claustrophobic, unsettling mood needed for a psychological thriller. The production sometimes feels too polished when a grittier, more immersive approach might have served the story better.

The cast delivers competent performances, but the characters don’t always feel as layered as they should. Rachel’s (Giovanna Fletcher) turmoil is portrayed well, yet the emotional depth needed to truly connect with her journey feels slightly lacking. The supporting characters play their roles effectively, but the tension between them never fully crackles.

Overall, The Girl on the Train is a well-structured adaptation that stays true to its source, but it doesn’t quite capture the suspense or psychological depth that made the novel such a hit. Fans of the book may appreciate seeing the story brought to life, but those looking for a truly gripping thriller might find themselves wanting more
