Star of Wonder – Unity Theatre

This collaborative production from Theatre Porto and Teatro Pomodoro, originally performed at Theatre Porto in 2022, follows its own star as it travels from Ellesmere Port to arrive in Liverpool’s Unity Theatre where, under the direction of Nina Hajiyianni, it delights and enthrals in equal measure.

In this modern take on the nativity tale, five friends (Carmen Arquelladas; Jordan Connerty, Miwa Nagai; Nikki Hill; Simone Tani) and a teddy bear set out to follow a star using a unique form of transport. Despite becoming separated, their journey continues including having to overcome the challenges of mirages, sandstorms, and quicksand, as well occasional attacks from a pair of shepherds and their flock of sheep. With the group eventually reunited, the question is whether they will finally find what they are looking for? Or does the answer perhaps lie closer to home…

Patrick Dineen’s innovative sound design successfully captures the ever-changing mood as it charts their ups and downs in perfect accompaniment to Cathy Cross’ subtly evolving scenescape which, superbly lit by Phil Saunders, incorporates an enchanting rendition of the night sky, complete with some unusual yet fairly familiar constellations to marvel at.

The international ensemble performs strongly demonstrating all their physical theatre skills including clowning, mime, puppetry, and slapstick humour in this tale of friendship, fortitude, and forgiveness, where morals and mischief segue throughout its surreal mix of madcap magical mayhem.

The show is designed for children from Reception up to Key Stage 2, with its sensitive and inclusive production providing gentle audience engagement as well as all performances being relaxed to allow children to enter and leave as necessary. Judging by the laughter, this memorable production went down a treat and may well inspire the next generation of entertainers and performers on their own journey to the stage.
