Something About Lennon – Theatre Royal, St Helens

The latest production from the acclaimed team behind Something About George and Something About Simon, Something About Lennon goes beyond mere tribute—it’s a theatrical deep dive into the life, music, and complexity of one of history’s most influential artists. Far from a standard nostalgia trip, this show brings an intense and thoughtful exploration of John Lennon’s journey, presenting his highs and lows with both reverence and raw honesty.

Making its debut tour from May to July 2025, Something About Lennon will travel across 26 venues nationwide, with a standout performance at Theatre Royal, St Helens, on May 27th. At the heart of this production is Liverpool actor, West End performer, and musician Daniel Taylor, whose stage presence and musicality anchor the show in authenticity. Supported by an exceptional five-piece band—featuring Musical Director Joe Smithson, Callum Macmillan, Jesse Eigen, and James Breckon—the ensemble delivers a soundtrack that is nothing short of electrifying.

Upon entering the Theatre Royal, St Helens, you’ll be greeted by an exceptional Front of House team ready to enhance your experience, providing a warm welcome and essential information about the theatre’s facilities and your seat location, which in turn sets the tone for an immersive and engaging experience. But what truly sets this production apart is its ability to intertwine music and storytelling, seamlessly shifting between Lennon’s artistry and his personal struggles. Rather than presenting an airbrushed depiction of his life, Something About Lennon confronts his moments of controversy, political activism, and personal reinvention, painting a portrait that feels real and resonant. It gives an insight to Lennon’s childhood and breakup of his first marriage, all of which influenced some of his greatest work

The show takes audiences through the crucial years between the Beatles’ breakup and Lennon’s tragic murder in 1980 in New York, examining his creative rebirth, his evolving relationship with Yoko Ono, son Sean and his commitment to activism. The soundtrack is filled with poignant classics, including 9 Dream, show opener Instant Karma, and the highly emotional Imagine, alongside lesser known Beatles tracks from the White Album such as Yer Blues that transport listeners back to an era of musical revolution ending with Give Peace a Chance.

Co-producer Bill Elms emphasises Lennon’s untimely departure just as he was embarking on an exciting and creatively fulfilling new chapter, adding to the emotional weight of this production. More than four decades after his passing, Lennon’s cultural impact remains undeniable, and Something About Lennon ensures his legacy is honoured in a way that is thought-provoking, heartfelt, and unforgettable.

For die-hard Lennon fans and newcomers alike, this production is an absolute must-see. Finally, a mention to the very talented in-house crew responsible for the sound, lighting stage design and 70’s style projected back drop.
