Do we really know the story of Mozart, or his genre of music from symphonies, opera. concertos to chamber music. Through his classical period from (1756-1791) his body of work continues to enchant generations, and audiences today. Twenty-Five-year-old Charli Eglinton has been moved by Mozart as a composer and has brought to the stage Saving Mozart a musicaldepicting the life span of Mozart’s, gruelling childhood rituals to his breakthrough and recognition of being an esteemed composer, to his untimely death at the age of 35yrs.
What strikes you from the beginning, the stage is small, the set is carved out as a letter M, with reflecting mirrors positioned to enhance the illusion of optimal space for all the characters to dance, act creating movement from a horse’s carriage to a boarding house.
Justin Willimas created an intimate emotional space to enhance the storylines and showcase the actors which was phenomenal.
“This is not just Wolfgangs story” Eglinton says she “wanted to champion the two remarkable women who not only shaped his life but ultimately saved his legacy”. This is a fascinating compelling story of a father’s determination to raise a ‘prodigy’ that impacts the lives of Mozarts’ mother, sister, and wife. The cast looked at ease with each other from Little Mozart jumping on the piano with standout performances from Nanneri, Aimie Atkinson, Mozart Jack Chambers, their brother sister relationship was pure, beautiful and brutal. Jordan Luke Gage’s portrayal as the Italian competition Antonio Salieri was breathtaking.
Gloria Onitiri vocals amazing in both the characters she played a very convincing performance.
This musical’s soundtrack was one of the many highlights with memorable songs in Act 1 Remember me and He’s Only a Child to the beautiful quirky You Just Don’t’ Know it Yet the duet between Mozart and is soon to be wife Constanze Erin Caldwell from Act 2. At times if felt too long with the story taking a slow walk through the 2hr 15mins of Mozart’s life. Could it be shortened, possibly, nonetheless it has great appeal and may not be everyone’s choice, but you will not be disappointed.
It has trigger warnings of strobe lighting, mentions of death and illness with some strong language.
The exquisite writing and contemporary music created by Charli Eglinton is a delight to watch and hear, so refreshing. This young female writer with her ambition to tell the authentic story about this iconic composer, succeeds in leaving you with a full heart and will educate all ages to the man behind the music, Mozart.
