Notre Dame – Online Digital Theatre

Victor Hugo’s seminal gothic work is brought to life in a new adaptation from writer Stuart Crowther in this live online one-shot promenade performance from the exciting Threedumb Theatre.

The story is basically one of obsession and retribution as the three main characters (Esmerelda, Frollo and Quasimodo) plummet into a vortex of passion, hatred and violence.

Crowther’s exquisite script breathes new and vibrant life into a story that is perhaps over familiar to many, but the strength of the writing ensures that the characterisation is both fresh and dynamic.

Stephen Smith’s adroit direction is thoughtful and painstakingly detailed throughout and he gets some fine performances from his small cast of four.

Gary Duncan as the tortured Quasimodo gives a hugely sensitive portrayal as the tragic bellringer in thrall to the traveller Esmerelda played with great verve by Maria Masonou. Duncan Riches gives a sound performance as the evil priest Frollo and Lizzie Burder shines in the role of the strange chorus character Stryga.

Its all grim and gloom but there’s no denying the sheer exuberance that the cast and crew bring to the table and Crowther’s writing is supremely satisfying.

The use of The Space in London is an excellent choice because it adds so much to the atmosphere of Crowther’s piece and the camera work, also by Stephen Smith is exceptional.

The sound design by Joseph Furey was quite reminiscent of Goblin’s score for the horror masterpiece Susperia but that in itself didn’t distract from its urgent power and resonance.

This is a rich and totally absorbing modern treatment of the old tale delivered with great aplomb and imaginative style.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing what comes up next from Threedumb theatre.
