& Juliet – Opera House, Manchester

When this Musical first debuted in Manchester in 2019; I became an immediate fan and I was over the moon when &Juliet announced a UK Tour this year with its first stop at the Manchester Opera House.

The vibrant reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic is such a feel good musical, you can’t help but love it as it takes you on an exhilarating journey that is both uplifting and deeply entertaining, powered by an incredible back catalogue of hits penned by the legendary Max Martin.

From the opening number to the final curtain and cancelling to Justin Timberlake hit ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’, & Juliet is a joyous celebration of self-discovery and empowerment throughout!

This new tour features a brand new cast; with Matt Cardle as the Bard himself and the sensational Gerardine Sacdalan as Juliet.

Matt Cardle’s portrayal of Shakespeare is both charming and humorous, adding a unique layer of modernity to the narrative. His performance is engaging and brings a fresh perspective to the iconic playwright. Gerardine Sacdalan, as Juliet, shines brightly with her remarkable vocal prowess and captivating stage presence. She effortlessly brings Juliet to life, offering a rendition that is both poignant and empowering.

The musical’s strength lies not only in its innovative storytelling but also in its exceptional cast. Lara Denning as Anne and Sandra Marvin as Angelique deliver standout performances that elevate the entire production. Denning’s vocal talent is nothing short of extraordinary, infusing her character with depth and emotion. Similarly, Marvin’s portrayal of Angelique is powerful and soulful, her voice resonating with strength and passion.

The production is a masterclass in musical theatre, seamlessly weaving Max Martin’s chart-topping hits into the narrative. Songs like “Baby One More Time,” “Since U Been Gone,” and “Roar” are ingeniously repurposed, adding layers of meaning and fun to the story. The choreography is dynamic, the set design is visually stunning, and the overall direction is sharp and inventive.

There was a technical issue during the show towards the start but after a brief pause to the production; this was resolved and a packed auditorium cheered with excitement as the show resumed.

& Juliet is more than just a musical; it’s an exhilarating experience that leaves the audience feeling uplifted and inspired. With an outstanding cast led by Matt Cardle and Gerardine Sacdalan, and the unforgettable music of Max Martin, this tour is just as fabulous as the original west end production!

Verdict: Packed with glitter, laughs and the best music – It’s a must-see!
