Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – Winter Gardens, Blackpool

A magical evening at The Winter Gardens Blackpool. Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is in town this week.

I have seen the show previously but even if this is the case for you, this performance was a whole new experience.

This is the perfect show to bring the children to, it’s short energetic, engaging and full of fun. The performance started at 7.30pm and was over by 9.30pm with a short interval.

With a mesmerising score form Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice this musical never fails to fill the theatre. It was so nice to see The Winter Gardens so busy.

The cast and creatives have done a superb job putting this tour together and keeping the piece fresh. Choreography by Joann M Hunter, Direction from Laurence Connor and Musical Director John Rigby, a winning team.

The story is based on the book of Genesis from the bible, it tells of Joseph and his eleven brothers. Its family-friendly retelling of Joseph, familiar themes and catchy music have resulted in numerous stagings.

Lead by Narrator Linzi Hateley the cast were bouncing with enthusiasm and passion. The set was impressive and cleverly designed and was enhanced by a colourful array of costumes and props, the camels were a lovely touch.

Jac Yarrow as the protagonist Joseph gave us an effortless vocal with stunning vibrato and a commanding presence. Of course, Jason Donovan as Pharaoh went down very well with the ladies, bringing the Elvis-Esque persona to life with a costume leaving little to the imagination.

The use of the children’s ensemble playing minor roles throughout the show for me was genius, it was so nice to see them shine and every one of them was fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the little actor playing Potiphar and the soloist for Benjamin Calypso.

Overall, the ensemble numbers were well choreographed, beautifully sung and well executed, very strong cast and great to watch. Some shining moments for me were ‘Close every door’ and ‘One more angel in heaven’

The scenery used for the Egyptian scene was spectacular, no expense spared.

If you haven’t already seen this show, go and book your tickets, you won’t regret it. I took a 10-year-old boy with me, and he remained fully engaged throughout and loved every minute.

The majority of audience were on their feet for the Joseph Megamix finale, great to hear everybody singing along and joining in.
